Calling all clever people :) What do you make of this?

Hi Cal,

What makes you more authoritive on the matter that everyone else is wandernig down the wrong path? Can I kindly suggest that you open your mind as much as you're asking others too. 😉

I fully understand what you're saying, but there's only sighing, no enlightenment.

There are two trains of thought:
a) plane is decoupled, thrust will move the plane irrespective of wheel movement/non movement, hence plane take off
b) wheels must go faster than conveyor for movement to occur, hence no take off

If either is used as the sole foundation to an answer then of course you (the broader you) will be unable to contemplate the alternative.

Oh my, Oh my....what happened...did someone 'push the button'?
I'm in a time warp, it's like groundhog day....all over again...and again....didn't I just say that?

Guy's let's be honest here......there will ALWAYS be the one that thinks the plane stays on the ground...always....it may be 1 day later or 12 days later....just try harder NOT to get hooked back in but sit on the side lines with a smug grin....

Oh sod it! Now I'm posting again..........

Hi Cal,
I wanted to follow your reasoning step by step. Of course I believe the plane will take off. Please show me how you think this will unfold.

I love this virus, I mean thread. Passion runs needlessly high. 😉

I can't possibly believe that Cal thinks the plane can't take off....more that the question restricts the logic of movement...I think...right Cal?

did you read what i said ? like at all ? or did you just respond ?
I KNOW how a plane would ACT in that situation beleive it or not it has to do with aerodynamics..... the belt .. really dosnt to much

Hi Mr pilot sir, as you already know I'm in your boat, plane...whatever...kinda... and all I want to do is bring your attention to the question rather than the physics.
You see there are flaws with the detail..."matches the speed"?....Linear, rotational or surface?

A plane......jet, prop...VTOL?
Also your statement about a tethered plane ("if you tied that rear tail of the plane to a pole .. the plane would still take off") is true only to the latter of the 3 types.
1. Jet: Only thrust, no airflow over the wings therefore no lift.
2. Prop: Only if the plane was a light aircraft and the airflow from the props over the wings was sufficient to create lft.
3. Moveable direction of thrust!

Now we all know that the plane is not tethered.....

Therefore the plane must take off.....

Now try and imagine the matching speed thing again.....the scenarios are endless but one could easily come to the conclusion of expodential accelleration of belt and wheel resulting in the loss of the undercarriage before airspeed is sufficient to gain lift....

GOOD EH?

You see, there is more to this one than meets the eye.

Cal, how do you explain the results of my practical experiment then?

I'm not Cal, but I'm on the boat with him, so I'll answer. What you need to perform is an IMPRACTICAL experiment. Ie: you need to pull your endless sheet of paper at an ever increasing rate of acceleration, unattainable with your puny human hands.

Come aboard, Pinkmouse, we're expecting you. Gin & tonics served 24/7 on the promenade deck.

its not that i dont believe you .. its that yer wrong
its the same principale as if you tied that rear tail of the plane to a pole .. the plane would still take off ... and hover there ...

What? Well, since you have access to a plane and a piece of rope is available technology, why don't you go test this theory of yours.

It's no conveyer belt experiment, but I'd like to hear the results.

If it flies (hovers) when tethered to the earth, I GUARANTEE that both Cal and I will jump ship and join your team.

And, I will personally mail you a bottle of Gin.*

*No kidding, though video footage would be required.

what are you guys still argueing about? i already answerd this stupid questions it depends on the plane if its a small light HP sure it will take off im sure of it now anyother plane probably wont take off this is just a stupid question ... its like this ...

ok if you had a computer ... could it play a video game ? while burning a movie? i mean there are soooo many things that will determin if it will or not... ITS THE SAME STUPID question...
