Folks
I’m very proud to say the C-Horn is now built (apart from painting) and is now up and running in my lounge room.
I'm using a DX3 initially, but I'll also be trying the PM2A plus a Fotex 206E. Some tweaking of comp chamber underway now with felt covered wooden blocks.
Very happy with presentation of cabinets (at 1400mm tall), and great sound. Not as deep as the Big Funds...but very good none-the-less. Impeccable sound stage.
For a first-up design, I'm wrapped.
Here’s the pic of the speaker in my lounge room.

Here's what it will look like next week. I'm going for the dark red with a metallic fleck.

Looks very nice – an elegant aesthetic design. I am not a fan of the see through sides, which is a personal, (apparently) minority, aesthetic preference.
Will you be offering these for sale?
Also, what bonding agent is used in the MDF board; urea-formaldehyde? If yes, with a big chunk-o-MDF like that I'd ensure decent ventilation in that room. IIRC, although not fully understood, prolonged exposure formaldehyde vapour (which degasses from MDF) may cause a range of non-specific toxic effects at levels lower than those considered "safe" for most. Then there are the acute signs and symptoms of short-term exposure to excessive amounts... I'd not want to work with it an ongoing capacity. I am not saying it will be a problem; just suggesting caution.
Nice work.
Cheers

Standard PVA is used.
I'm looking at alternate MDF products with less/minimal nasties...plus new plys and a great product called panzerholz....though expensive.
Check out the base of the Clear Audio turntable here -
http://www.dagogo.com/ClearaudioAnniversarytable.html
I can CNC this material up to 60mm per slice.
And yes...the C-Horn is a sale product, in unassembled, part assembled or fully built stages. (Note - I'm a 'manufacturer' so I'm not allowed to directly promote....)

As a cabinetmaker I worked with many new MDF formulas. There are now non-toxic ones which bonding agent is cyanoacrylate glue (aka 'Crazy glue') most often. I even sampled a sheet of MDF made of powdered wheat straw and cyanoacrylate: sawing it smells like mowing the lawn. 🙂
In any case a well ventilated house is a good idea or the inside becomes quickly more polluted than the streets of a big city. Also sealing and painting the toxic MDF is essential since it slows down the rate of emanations to a minimum that is easily evacuated.
Hi,
Regarding MDF emissions use class E1 boards. Even if one has some small amount of formal dehyde emitting from boards, there are much more formal dehyde from a bowl of apples or strawberries in a room. Not to mention walking in a pine forrest during spring.😉

BTW, do not be sure that plywood is glued with a formal dehyde free adhesive.....
Here is one link that provides E2,E1,E0

Smart looking "box"
I'll be very interested in how the sound changes (i'd expect better, maybe way better) as you move to these materials.

Andrew and others, thanx for your replies.
Andrew, as I am in Brisbane, if I were going to get a speaker (or other - amp chasis?) CNCed, you would be my first point of call.
Thanx for the responses regarding materials as well; all very helpful.
All the best

Thanks.
I'm thinking of tryin panzerholhz to computer cut and glue up. Can machine up to 60mm thick.

This is the excellent (and costly) product used by Clearaudio for their top-spec turn-table bases.

DIY Licensing
Do you think you might be able to sell plans with a license to
build, say, four cabs for an appropirate fee? I suspect that
they may be buildable with the router working against an appropriate
template to control the profile. Crazy for production but OK
for a DIYer.
Thanks,

Pics of Visaton 200B in new C-Horn!!!
I'm blown away by this driver used in my C-Horns and the Big Funs.
http://www.creationaudio.com.au/library/chorn/pic4.jpg
Compared with the Lowther DX3's, the bass response of the Visaton is amazing....and for 1/5 the cost!!
What has been other people's experience with this driver?
Also - has any one tried the Visaton Quadro (using 4 of the 200B drivers per sealed cabinet)?

Andrew,
Send me the link to the right picture and i'll fix it.
I also fixed the thread title where you mucked up the name of the driver.

Michael, to confirm, it is the B200 (not 200B)...
