Jason,

I have always loved this forum just the way it is and constantly recommend it to others! It could stay this way forever as far as I aam concerned!

Thank you for all that it has been!

AND

Thank you for all that it will be!

I will continue to love this place, no matter what you do. The software is only software and the features are only features.

BUT, the people here are EVERYTHING this place is about.

They are what has always made this place and will continue doing so!

That is what makes this place! LOVE

Love for so many things. Music, Ideas, SHARING, Advice, Development together and alone, Keeping us straight on track, Etc. Etc., Etc...

Thank you and I am PROUD to be a member here. Not so much because of the software but because of YOU>>>> Each and every one of YOU!

Regards//Keith

Regarding the search function: maybe reduce the search interval based on length of time membership, number of posts, or whatever. Also, hopefully, a better way to embed images... that is, the img tag allows you to have embedded images, but, they're links to offsite images, and as such have a propensity for going away as anyone can see by looking at posts more than several years old. So, hopefully, we can have inlined images that are uploaded to the site for perpetual viewing! And a big ditto on skinnable site! I rather like the current skin and would miss it if we went to a puce or mauve or... 🙂

Thanks for the wonderful site!!!

Tom.

Wow, thanks. That's a whole lot of work. I appreciate DIY Audio, the admins, maintainers, moderators, who pays the electric bill, the janitor, you get the message

.... oh, yea! I almost forgot the DIY Audio community!!!!!

(well, at least most of them)

All very true, and I must say it's good to be looked after by people who really care!

Might it be an opportune time to revise the 100Kb file size limit for attachments? I find it a bit frustrating having to use 20% jpeg compression on 25% resized photos. There's no quality left in them at <100Kb. Even 150Kb would be a huge improvement.

Certainly there will be new categories and forums. It is a touchy thing they say- too many forums dilutes the energy of posters, too few and it is hard to find stuff and confusing.

I did add quite a few more though- we needed them!

Mark

What would be handy is if we could select forums to ignore (or select ones we want to search in for..) on "Get New Posts" 🙂

Cheers!

With this upgrade maybe now we'll get the "Passive Preamp" forum and others which we sorely need to keep diyaudio cleaner, too much inter breading of topics and offshoots on the one forum at the moment.

Yes, we are addressing that in the new design!

I'm sure you have some competent system administrators but just a few words of advice from someone who has been working with linux systems for over 10 years:

1. Make sure everything is backed up to the hilt and then backup again to another location.
2. With the database file make sure you do the backup with all the records closed. Don't just backup the file whilst its live, better still do a dump of the database.
3. Try and run the new system in parallel on a entirely different server and when your happy with the new system migrate to it.
4. Run the new system in a "Alpha" phase with a select group for a month to iron out the bugs before you go live (migrate to it).

All good advice, and pretty much what we're doing.

Is there a possibility that we have a place that teaches the basics of electronics/ acoustics etc so that new members can do a bit of research?

Yes, making it easier for people to learn will be a focus of the new site.

Ho pleeeaaase keep the new forum simple for guys like me who can only have low speed internet.

It's a pretty lightweight skin coming in, no flash/java or activeX, but maybe we can offer a "lite" version as well. I'd like to have a mobile version of the site in the future so it's easily usable on a phone. That's something for the future...

Please don't limit the search function to once every 20 seconds. It's aggrevating if you accidently type in the wrong or unsuccessful search and have to wait to modify it.

Regarding the search function: maybe reduce the search interval based on length of time

I agree it's super annoying. It should really "scale" for protection of the website rather than a static x searches per y seconds limit. Allowing one or two mistakes in the first 30 seconds is a good idea.

Might it be an opportune time to revise the 100Kb file size limit for attachments?

The image upload will be greatly improved 🙂

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

As a humble request though, let's not allow 20+ 700Kb pics in one post like some people are so prone to doing on their web pages 🙄

Cheers!
Yes, an automatic rejection on this terrible practice.
It slows down the whole web industry,as every time some asks for that page the whole lot goes over the microwave/fibre and around the world. Have some pity for those that are still on dial up.

Some of the pages here with a tonne of hotlinked photobucket images take a minute+ to load on my DSL connection. I can imagine a dial-up user's pain! 🙁

Cheers!
I feel with you. I was in the same postion three years back but now I have 8 MBit. 2-24 MBit is what people have here. Dial-up is very rare here and it's pretty expensive also! Normal price is 10-12 bucks per month for 2 Mbit or faster.

I first saw the announcement today so I'm behind the times.

Of the four pages of posts I read and skimmed, the one request that stands out for me is to continue the lack of motion ads so common elsewhere.

I'll tell you a secret: for one site I actually made a cardboard blinder for the motion ads.

I hope the forum is supported well enough by members to keep it free of google adwords and other "helpful" enhancements.

No shoot the duckie, compare your IQ or any of the other adware that makes the internet a place of tasteless garbage.
