hi, which one do you think would perform better?
33pF Polystyrene Capacitors 5 50VDC 50 Items per Sale Lot | eBay
vs
5 Mallory 22pF 600V Polystyrene Axial Capacitors 5 | eBay
higher rating on mallory but the other one seem to be copper tinted.

Both ebay links provided no information for me. I understand this is a known problem, although one which from time to time is claimed to be solved.
However, you need to tell us what circuit function you wish them to perform and what you mean by better.

You can expect them to be different, very different. 1) they are different values and 2) they are different voltages.
The higher voltage caps will have more dielectric between the plates for insulation.

i was hoping someone could take a look at them to guess as to if either one of them is film element.
here we go. the first pic is for 220pf but i'm after 33pf and the circuit, miniref, where i'll be using them can accommodate both 33 and 22 tho with better distortion/worse stability trade off.

It is difficult to tell outright from the pic, or even the spec sheet: in general PS caps are OK, but I have measured a number of counter-examples, even from manufacturers you wouldn't think are questionable.
Anyway, unless you intend to use them for power applications, it doesn't really matter.....

Much worsewere the poor measuring ones worse than a film pp cap?
I can't tell from the pics, but I'd probably go with the radial lead ones, rather than the axials. The radial lead, copper foil ones (Noble?) have been OK. Evox/Rifa PFE225 and a Philips KS, both square cross-section box types, are also very good, as are ERO KP1834 and KP1835.
