Best speakers <$100

I have had dozens of A25 (A10, A25XL, A35 & A40 too). OK for the time but i could not live with a pair.

I would like to hear a pair with new properly built boxes, rebates, mirror imaged, treat the woofer, remove the metal grill on the tweeter, and rebuild the XO to see how they do.

dave

the modern seas tweeter really bring the a-25 to another level. recapped and tweeter changed and its a decent system. id take that system over a fullrange driver for sure.

Not me -- i have heard similar. That 10" bass driver really has trouble with the mid-range, and i am not a big fan of dome tweeters (can't be XOed low enuff).

You should come by and listen to some of our FR speakers.

Good to know. The fried egg in the Advents was a real step up from the stock A25 tweeter.

yeah, I had led my pair to a friend before the mod of the tweeter, after the mod I regave the pair to my friend, he was really shocked by the improvement. imagin is actually decent now, but the woofer is not to modern standard, but pretty warm, great tone, decent midbass and up, just not resolute enough.

What if I'll pay the shipping fee???

The OP is unlikely close enuff, but for others looking to accomplish something similar i am giving away 100s of vintage speaker drivers, you just have to come & get them.

Hi Dave what if I'm willing to pay whatever the shipping cost is + say $25 for your trouble?

I have some nice Def Tech Studio Monitor 450's, a pair of Cerwin Vega RE-24's that need two replacement 10" woofers.

I'm also looking for a pair of nice floorstanding speakers that will easily best the C-V 3 ways that are 6 Ohm rated speakers and are just not really any good.

Thanks for your post. Steven Level

I'm set on finding a pair of Dynaco A25's, but in the meantime I've picked up a pair of Technics SB-CR77 3 way speakers at goodwill for $20.

One speaker is in great condition, but all three drivers are dented on the other one. (Here is the manual Technics SB-CR33 User Manual (Page 4 of 4))

It seems like these are cheap enough that it wouldn't make sense to install new cones.. or would it? The speaker uses a 30cm or 12" woofer, 10cm or 4" midrange, and a 5.5cm or 2-5/32" tweeter. Should I replace with factory drivers? Any suggestions on better replacement drivers? Do new drivers need new crossovers? I'm still just a toddler finding my way here

I've got ~$80 to spend on drivers. I was never planning on adamantly sticking to a $100 budget, but I am trying to stay roughly around that price, and if I dont atleast try I'll end up spending far more than I should right now

I wouldn't spend another dime on those Technics speakers. There really isn't anything redeeming about them and your money is much better spent hunting down better speakers. Where are you located? As an experiment I looked on my local Craigslist and found about 4 pairs of excellent speakers for $120 or less that would be a great start for you.

I can't believe these are budget speakers... | Audiokarma Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums

Replacing all the drivers would probably be a waste of time. The 12" woofer is probably run "free" with no crossover. The other drivers probably have a single cap on them. The cabinet is probably unbraced 1/2" chipboard.

I would just play around with bracing them and adding damping material etc, just to get a sense of what sorts of changes those methods can make.

If you want to learn about speakers, start with something like a fullranger, then progress to 2-way, then to 3-way.

I used a really cheap fullranger salvaged from a boombox and played with coating them with elmers glue back in the day - made a hafler matrix setup with them, did all kinds of experiments. IF you don't have money, play with cheap stuff. Nowadays if you have a computer you can make measurements without much financial outlay.

What about this speaker make you all say its so bad? Why would replacing the drivers not make it a worthwhile experience?

Look at it this way, complexity increases much faster than you might think. I would put it somewhere around the number of drivers squared or cubed. In the lower estimate, if dealing with a single driver is a difficulty of 1, dealing with 2 is a difficulty of 4 and with three a difficulty of 9. In the higher estimate, the difficulties are 1, 8 and 27. If you know very little about speakers, crossovers, etc, the chances of you getting something right is very small.

The chances of you throwing something together and convincing yourself that it is good are paradoxically very high. This is known in the business as i-did-it-itis, the well known fact that people (especially a novice) cannot think objectively about their creation. Even experienced folk are sometimes excluded from design reviews in engineering circles because they are convinced they made the "correct" decision at every step and cannot see the big picture.
