1st orders can be fun.
it is just tough to find drivers that sum.
I was just playing around with 1st orders for fun.
But was really smooth 2" dome midrange.
old school 2 way be at 800 Hz
and classic 3rd order to make the horn work.
unless you go really old school like the
old Jensen Bass Reflex radio speakers.
modern "equivalent" would be guitar speakers.
and the old reflex boxes were tuned miles high in
the fart o sphere. LOL

I disagree...Consensus, on diyaudio.com??? I don’t think that’s ever happened on any topic ;-)
Humble Homemadehifi chose the 12PR320 as top choice,, so that should tell you something

They also chose a P-Audio horn without baffle and a small Faital Pro 1" driver.
That's not bad material but not the best money can buy.

"I tried various combinations of about five different compression drivers and ten different horns."
The man is VERY meticulous with his choices, though.

Now the price of the 12PR320 twiced in less than two years, I would look at the 12" from BMS, T. Gravsen chose for the last 3 Way classsic he did. Plus : lower Fs.
I wouldn't go much higher than around 300 Hz with that BMS 12n630 woofer.

The 12pr320 is indeed more versatile in the op context. However...internal box resonances are still a challenge if you want to go low (see OSMC threads)
I would say that's normal for a proper development ... ;-) esp. if you want to sell your stuff."I tried various combinations of about five different compression drivers and ten different horns."

I never liked the results I got with "naked" horns, they would have needed to be crossed over higher as you would get in a proper baffle. But I don't know this particular speaker. Off axis measurements would be interesting.
The 1" driver shows a big resonance at 17-8kHz - and these measurements are strongly smoothed. That's not neccessary in 2023 - there are drivers which are flat to 20kHz without big resonances. DE360 for example:
He posted the result in the article:
Looks pretty good, doubt the peak is much of an audible issue, if he went ahead with that driver.

I second the 2206 which is very smooth with low distortion up to 1500hz. A sub would be great.F3 = 40 hz and flat to that high is a toughie.................
I like the jbl 2206h but you will be -9db @ 50hz, add some eq (I do).
Qts .3 and Fs 50hz make for not much low bass.
Another option is the eminence delta pro 12a (that I want to make something with) with its slightly climbing response but no sharp resonant spikes in the hf.
2 in 5ft3 make 50hz tuning for F3 near 55hz...........
Bagby preferred it for rock and roll (in the diysound group tempest fusion) to a shorting ringed drivers that had measurabled lower distortion.
To be honest I care more about no resonances in the audio band as about the speaker wire used for cabeling the speakers ...Looks pretty good, doubt the peak is much of an audible issue, if he went ahead with that driver.
Let's face it - it's a 12"/1". Sorry but that's not HighEnd - to much compromises. I like the other design on his page - but I would not recycle the 12" box and build with a complete front baffle.

THESE have potential to be top of the range.
well, it's strange you say that, because he compared it with the Nova Andromeda (6rs140+tw29bn) and rates it a bit higherbut that's not HighEnd - to much compromises
i like the bottom one.
I've often thought on an eq/active crossover double 12" to horn, plus subs but maybe not.
