Someone asked for modern players?
I have to say,
Blinded by fear by At the gates (Anders Björler lead guitar) is probably the best metal solo i've heard. It's 15 seconds of pure bliss...
The rest of the song is great too.
One other guitarist i think you've missed is Josh Homme of Queens of the stone age. About any record i've heard with him is great! He has a kind of "less is more" approach with a feeling out of this world. Listen to some of his early stuff with Kyuss and i think you'll agree. The whole feel of the songs is something else.
The band (Qotsa) is great live too, i've seen them twice, they blew my mind both times.
Just my 2 cents.

(in complete contrast to what music i posted about) i too have seen qotsa live once before... and they are a very good live band. your observations of his style is also true... i have an interview with him in a aussie guitar mag where he discusses his aproach to guitar playing.. using descriptoins like 'i'm really just a frustrated drummer', and 'as i get older i feel the desire not to wank'

Dicky Betts-"Blue Sky"
Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) - "I'd Love to Change the World" among many.

Hi folks,
Jeff Beck always makes me pick up the old air guitar,
Especially "Brush with the blues" ( Who Else, 1999)
Re: Metallica - has anybody listend to " Apocalyptica" (otherwise known as " Four Cellos" play Metallica?
Imagine being a peasant in 1738 (when one of their instruments was made) and going to a Metallica style gig at the local tavern!
Paul.

Finally: a thread where I think I actually have an opinion!
John McLaughlin - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom
Warren Haynes - Mother Earth
Toy Caldwell (RIP) - Can't You See

Ler
I think I would also have to nominate Primus' guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde because: 1) He can keep up with Les 2) the guitar solo at the end of Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (May not be the HARDEST guitar solo ever but it's very melodic and fits the song perfectly)

Something by John Petrucci from Dream Theater. I have not heard a better rock guitarist. 'Scarred' is my favorite DT tune. 'Home' from SFAM is also good.
Page's solo in the famous live version of 'Stairway to Heaven' from The Song Remains the Same. It may be cliche to say it these days, but Stairway is still a solo to which all others are compared.
I second (or third) the nomination listed earlier about Stevie Ray doing 'Little Wing'. Masterpiece.
Triumph - Rik Emmett doing 'Little Boy Blues' and 'In The Night'. Many others too. (Don't know why he sucks so bad these days though.)
Smashing Pumpkins - Corgan doing 'Soma' and 'Rhinocerous'. Fantastic tunes. Very 90's style thick guitar.
'Lonely is the Word' by Sabbath. There were no Tony Iommi posts yet, so I had to put one in. In fact, "Heaven and Hell" is probably my all time favorite metal'ish album.
I could go on and on. Rush, Yes, Floyd, Maiden, etc....

My guys were:
Norman Blake - (old time traditonal)
Pink Floyd - (comfortably numb - was a life altering experience)
Frank Zappa - (saw in concert - top-flight musicianship!)
Billy Gibson or Gibbons or something like that - (NOT the ZZ top guy either. Was going through Wyoming when I heard it played on the Laramie station, totally wild, uncontrolled, chaotic Blues Rock, had me bouncing in my Uhaul truck seat at 11:00 pm!!! Would love to get the name if anyone has an idea.)
Thanks for all the ideas guys, got more to look into now. Great post!

Hi Guys - an eclectic list:
Red Hot Chilli Pepers - Funky Monks from blood sugar sex magik (the intro is amazing - I can just imagine the abuse the guitar is going through) definitely gotta crank this one to 11!
Yes - Leave it from 90215, roundabout from fragile (the entire fragile album is excellent musically but a very poor recording)
John Williams - mal aguena (sp?) - the man must have an extra finger!
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus Acoustic Version from PJ EP if you listen carefully you can actually hear the jingling of his chains (he must have been into bling before bling was in) who would have guessed any of them could play guitar?
Eagles - Hotel California intro from when hell freezes over (not strictly a solo)
Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John LcLaughlin - Saturday night in San Fransico

Ygnwie Malmsteen:
- Flamenco Diablo: I think I once put this on repeat for 6 hours in a row, that should mean something 🙂. Amazing really! Nothing like his neoclassical compositions, but like the title says: a flamenco. This is just plain incredible. Check this out! If anyone knows more stuff like this (super fast flamenco, well anything fast really, but not just plain shredding 🙂) please let me know!
Hm, well, his other songs/compositions are great too, but I was just listening too:
- Fire And Ice: Great solo at 2:25mins, starts lightning fast and then slows down a bit (ends at around 3:35, then the singing starts again)
I could go on, but I'd better continue learning for tomorrow's exams 🙂.

Eddie Hazel
Eddie Hazel's solo on Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" is one of the most beautiful and emotional guitar solos I have ever heard. It goes on for something like 12 minutes and it still seems too short. Supposedly, George Clinton had told Hazel to play "like your momma had just died."

I don't think anything beats that.

Yeah- Robin Trower was great
also ditto Jimi and Al Di Meola
for rock, check out skunk baxter or the others who played so many perfect solos for Steely Dan
Also Steve Howe of Yes- Check out "Mood For a Day" from Fragile
For classical, I'm by no means an expert but I like John Williams doing Bach's lute suites
cheers!

Speaking of Jeff Baxter, he is also (I Am Not Making This Up) a defence consultant.
