Did not realize owning a copy make an expert. Trust the 30 million in sales cause it can be backed up.
The Platinum was presented by the Record Company because it needed more than just gold after 100+ weeks on the hit charts.
Like them or not facts are facts or are you going to continue to say ...."Don't Confuse me with the facts my mind is made up"

By the way I looked at that top 100 site even that chart is wrong
The album "Thriller" is the #1 selling album of all times

That may well be true for Thriller's worldwide sales (although I never owned that one but do own the Eagles' record, neither have drum solos). However, let's stick to the subject of IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA. You're trying to blow smoke screens.

Duh! The second A in RIAA is of course for America. And it even says, "U.S. only." My only excuse is that it's the middle of the night here.

While I can only speculate, I still think that the American and European markets used to be very different. The great American band Blondie didn't break into its home market until their third album while being big in Europe.

But it should be said that even though many of the artists and albums on the RIAA site surprised me, it may just be ignorance on my part. I don't have that many albums that made the charts. Many of the names on the site I have only heard of, but don't know what they sound like. In some cases, like George Strait, I didn't even know there was such an artist!

While the U.S. record market my be the largest, it's also very difficult to penetrate - even if you live here. I would certainly expect many, many artists from Europe, Asia and everywhere else to be quite successful in their respective countries and territories without any exposure in the U.S.

George Strait is an EXTREMELY successful 'Country' artist. I believe he has about 50 No.1 Billboard Singles (Country Charts).

But this 'left-turn' by sweet, concerning Iron Butterfly, was just too much to ignore.

Embarassingly true. By that I mean an artist can go unnoticed in his home country until he makes it in the US.

Having that said, I think it's hard to make it in any market. The rewards are just so much bigger if you make it in America.

Try to discuss differences without calling names and making wild statements about a person, You have your sources and I have mine....I tend to believe mine ...you yours.
sometimes it is better to sit quite and be thought a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubts.

Your links all look fabulous. They do have some contradictions and wildy throw out numbers, awards and claims.

I can certainly believe that Ahmut Ertegun did award the band with an ATCO Records Award for sales and he very well may have coined the term 'Platinum Award', predating the RIAA, with a completely different definition. However, directly from the RIAA site, it clearly states when and what was designated the first RIAA Platinum Album.

If what you say is true and that ATCO/IB did sell 25 million units, worldwide or just in the U.S., this does not coincide to the RIAA certification of 4 million units.

Usually the label will tell the artist that they aren't selling any records. Your position is that the label is over-boasting record sales. Dangerous and very unlike someone like Ertegun.

To be clear, prior to 1976, an RIAA Gold album was awarded for $1 million in sales based on the manufacturer's wholesale price. I do not doubt that IB may have sold 1 million copies in '68. However, selling an additional 24 million? I find that hard to believe.

In any event, I got that old LP out and gave it a spin. The recording budget must've been about $500. :bigeyes: Geeze! Good performance, though.

The only drum sequence I've ever found more moving than Ringo Starr playing synchronized, and possibly choreographed, with another drummer on "Bangladesh" was Karen Carpenter on her Christmas special. There she did the same thing with herself, double tracked video.

Then again, in the first part of "Bangladesh" where Ravi Shankar is jamming and trading riffs with his tabla player, that's something everyone should watch in order to understand how drums are more than simply percussion.
