Best 8 inch woofer?

A 15" is better ! A 8" is not at ease below 100Hz... But if you have size constraints...
Yup, it's an 8" woofer thread ;)
I think it would be tricky to make a smooth and sleek looking tower speaker with 15" woofers and a narrow baffle around the midrange/tweeter/coax, which IMO is needed to have a smooth and precise stereo image. I find wide baffle speakers to have a less precise image, because the much bigger baffle contribute too much with all sorts of "new" sounds, rather than just the sound from the drivers alone.
Maybe the huge speaker from Dunlavy, where the entire front is heavily covered in felt:

Nevertheless, I do like big woofers, I just need to build the best I can with the bag of compromises that I've already chosen :giggle:

What about the SEAS CA22RNY? Does anyone used or heard these? Any experience based opinion?
I only tried the L22 and have the DXT. But I believe they make pretty good drivers all over.
The RNY seem well ventilated, light coned, high efficiency and over-all a good driver - for around the price of Wavecor or SS classic.

MCM 55-2960 RAW FREQUENCY RESPONSE

May 23, 2018 – Preliminary Listening Test in 25 liters Ported Box. (Port Dia=2″. Length=6.50″)

No crossover is used. Audition with woofer in RAW state.
Mid-Bass (80Hz-125Hz) – Dynamic. Detail. Tight. No Bloom.
Low Bass (40Hz) – Audible. No Bloom.
Vocals (125Hz upwards) – Sounds Flat. No audible peaks.
Bass and Vocals Balance – Good. Bass doesn’t over-power voices.

Conclusion

Despite the widely different Thiele & Small Parameters, the MCM 55-2960 sounds perfectly fine.
Suitable for PA and even HiFi. Fantastic value for $15.21.

Why is this a subwoofer??? Looks like it can be used in a two speaker- even fullrange-like an old Dynaco, SEAS A26, Devore.

It's no Revelator, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it to the 1K I used here. Pair it with something like the Beast Mode tweeter in a 6 or 8 inch waveguide and it would make a cool, cheap large 2-way.

Attached are in-box measurement of the woofer. One is distortion the other is gated. As I said, I wouldn't be afraid to use it all the way to 1K. It might even do well as an old school 2-way using the top end roll off as the crossover.
Sorry for potato quality pictures but its all I have (I think).

"I am glad I tested all the woofers I had as it resulted in one making the cut that I didn't even consider initially, the GRS 8SW-4. The 8SW-4 has smooth frequency response up past 2 kHz which was totally unexpected since it is labeled as a subwoofer. Funny how it's actually better suited for 2-way designs and has a smoother frequency response then any of GRS's other 8" woofers."

Has anyone heard or used these woofers?
