Best 15" driver suited for high xover frequency?

Some opinions worth pondering over at TalkBass ( re; woofer HF extension ).

Make sure to listen through a good fullrange system.

🙂

I have the Kappalite 15s in both my Ampeg B15N portaflex and Mark bass combo. They are excellent drivers but they have a hard to correct peak at the top so I regard them as a dedicated pro driver. I've never measured or listened to them in a test enclosure, but they may be surprising. Just hearing what they do for electric and upright bass is pretty amazing, so maybe its worth giving them a chance... hmm...

Keeping the moving mass on the light side is the key and makes for a snappy sounding driver that works in a larger box as long as Qts is in the sweet spot ie. .40 - .50 ish range and Fs isn't too high. The Vas on this type of driver is typically high so it wont be ideal in a reasonably sized enclosure. Someone else recommended aperiodic dampening which I'm in fact a fan of.

Does anyone know of a decent waveguide that will work with the larger 1.5 or 2 inch drivers?

The right 15 and a 1" compression driver will "work", but to me the vocals are never very good. Use a 1.4" CD and a bigger horn and things come together. If using a 1" CD and small horn then an 8-10" midrange fills in nicely between horn and woofer. FOr PA use that midrange can be in a waveguide or shallow horn.

If those are true I suggest the eminence delta-pro 15A. MMS 61 g vs kappalite 3015 82 g. Qt .4 instead of .34. Infinite baffle frequency response extends to 3 khz. Bit of a rise above 1000 hz. However they suggest it only for a sealed box.
