Ok I'm building a system for my friend and would like to know what's the best sub he can get for $200 or less (or a lil over 😉 ). He's looking for a sub with good SQ, can go very low and also can get loud. So far we have been looking at the following, (please feel free to bash, add, do whateva):
1/ Elemental Designs 12" Ov.2 Dual 2 $165
2/ Stryke audio AV12 MKII $175
3/ Adire DPL12 12" $150

So far he has already gone ahead and bought his speakers:
Eclipse 6.5s for the fronts and Eclipse 6x9s for the rear.
And CDT TW-19/LP-S tweeters
Pioneer 860Mp H/U
Please steer us in the right direction as we can't actually go out and sample these subs as we live in St.Lucia in the Caribbean so......Oh yea It's going into a 99 Lancer. All help is welcomed
😀

Hmm thanx so far. As for the dual sub setup, great idea, but he only wants a single sub in the car, don't ask me why but that's what he wants 🙄. Keep the ideas comin........Oh yea can you give me a link to the Peerless so i can check it out......

Is there any reason he only wants one woofer? An isobaric bandpass box will be smaller than a single sealed box and the woofers will both be hidden. Also, if you can port it into the cabin you'll probably get more useable bass than with a standard sealed or ported design.

Well i spoke with him and it's simple. He wants to go with a nice and simple setup. He's trying to prove a point that you can go with one sub and still have lots of sound. Also to go with a brand that's not popular here and still show it's better than the crap they have here and also turn heads. I swear, the best sub sold down here is pioneer. The only subs ppl around here consider any good are kicker, fosgate, and audiobahn. I swear i'm one of the few ppl in this country that thinks outside of the box......... 😱

There's nothing wrong with a single subwoofer. It's simple, compact, affordable, and will still get plenty loud. I think any one of those 3 choices will work great. They're all good subwoofers. A small sealed enclosure would probably be my choice... it'll nicely compliment the vehicle's cabin gain, is simple to build, and will take up the least amount of space.

The TC-Sounds woofers will do what your friend wants very well. TC Sounds also builds Audiobahn woofers, but the TC-Sounds brand woofers will be able to give you the performance for less money. Also, tell your friend to build a ported box. I have found that a 10" in a ported box with the right amplification can completely rock the entire car. Just don't account for cabin gain* in your design. 😀

*I just threw my DIY home subwoofer in the back of my dad's car (now my car) one day and cranked it up. It was funny with the extension cord running down the driveway but it worked. Very well. Your box will be a little bit bigger but it will make a tremendous amount of sound.

this woofer

in an ELF design. (small sealed enclosure eq. below fs.) An ELF design gives flat freq. and phase.

the reason for this woofer is that distortion is low, even below fs (which is VERY unusual). (with good linear x-max). this is VERY important in a subwoofer and most don't have the ability to go low without a LOT of distortion. Also powerhandling is monsterous.

drivers distortion vs. freq. plots are at Beyma's site here (12lx60):

Hmm, well if TC sounds makes Eclipse subs, then i thas to be good. I'm not a fan of audiobahn, but that's another story 🙄 . Anywayz, you'll recommended the "RL-i Series driver from SoundSplinter", however i see one that looks better, the "RL-p Premium Series ". What do you'll think bout that instead?

That would be a real shame if TC really did make the Audiobahn crap. Up until now, I've only known them to make good quality products. I certainly wouldn't put audiobahn anywhere near that category. 🙁

But... that doesn't mean TC can't make great stuff... it just means that's not what audiobahn has asked of them.
