BB OPA2604AP In shanling CD-T80 for OPA627AP?

Hi everyone!

Quick question - I have a Shanling CD-T80 (great player) which uses three Burr Brown OPA2604AP chips which are - conveniantly - housed in turned sockets ;-)

I just happen to have a few OPA627AP op-amps to hand, and was wondering if I can use these as a straight subtitute for the '2604s? Had a look at the date sheets (I'm no expert alas) but it appears they use different pin-configurations.

Coudl someone please confirm whether or not I can substitute OPA2604AP for the OPA627AP?

Many thanks!

- John

You can't use OPA627 in place of the 2604 as the 627 is a single channel opamp and the 2604 is dual. You should mount two 627 in an adapter to have a dual OPA627. I've tried both and OPA627 is much better. If the output stage isn't DC coupled, it may be a good idea to use a extreme quality cap at the output, like Mundorf Silver in Oil or Hovland.

Paco

Thanks Jomar / Paco!

Very helpful - I'll definately order three of those Brown Dogs. Can't seem to find them in the UK though which is annoying.

Bit worried about occilations in the 627 chip as its already in a socket, and with the Brown Dog it'll then be in two sockets! Guess I'll have to just try it and see.

Cheers,

Hi thanks for your replies!

Yes I managed to get the brown dog adaptors a whiel back, and installed the OPA627s. I have to say however that I didn't like them in the Shanling - sounded far too clinical and th eemotional seemed stripped away from the recordings. Perhaps they needed the + and - pins pypassed or something? (Not really possible given the limited space on the brown dog converter). Lived with it for just over a month then tried some OPA2134s which sounded MUCH better (for this player at least) so have stuck with those.

I'm will be using the OPA627s in a Quad 34 rebuild I am currently doing.

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your insights about various opamps in the Shanling CD-T80. As so many times happens, making a difference not necessarily means improvement.
The OPA2134 seems a viable alternative since being two-channel and not very expensive. Curiously, despite better specs than the OPA2604 it costs less.
The CD-T80 is fine sounding as it is, a genuine improvement on the trusty old Audiomeca Kreatura/Elixir combo it replaced so maybe I'll just swop the valves for some RCA NOS specimens and live with it for some time.

Before you starting spending money on OPAXXX and browndogs I would suggest that you contact TI.com and ask for four samples of these and then select the best three > sound and minimum DC offset.

I'm currently using OPA2227s in my Shanling CD-T80 and they sound alot better than the OPA627/Brown Dog route, at least in my player and my system. Really very refined sound, they almost sound matter of fact until you hear the real metallic shimmer of a cymbal bring brushed or hit or the twang of a guitar, the fruity rasp of a trumpet etc. They seem to 'tell it like it is' with no false shows of bravado. The noise floor is also inky black - very impressive. Again these are available as samples from TI.

Cheers!

Do you guy change all the 3 op-amps?

I am from HK and a shop suggested just to change one (the single one in the rear) as he recogned that changing the other 2 will not do much for the sound. Then I changed the one to OPA627AM (need adaptor), it sounds warmer but the sound seems to be a bit coloured.

Do you think that I should change the other 2 OPA for more improvement? Any other recommendation on OPAs BB2134, BB2107, AD865, AD8066, etc.

Thanks!

Well after improving (extensively rebuilding actually) my Quad 34 pre-amp I've found that I now prefer the Brown Dog/OPA627AP route in my Shanling CD-T80. Obviously the pre-amp is now more revealing than before, and the 627s are acually showing their true potential now. Either that or they've benefitted from a bit of extra running in.

Honestly, this hobby can drive one nuts - hahaha! At this rate I'll be back with the original chips next week :cannotbe:

Hmmm I had no trouble at all getting my samples ordered, but I was registered about 3 years back so maybe that made a difference. I had to pay for P&P due to - they say - the high levels of interest in this chip. Wonder why? 😉

Discovered a major 'fault' with my Shanling CD-T80 yesterday evening which means I have to start evaluating all my chips again from scratch. As I imported my Shanling I suddenly had the nagging feeling one morning that perhaps it may not have been set up for the correct voltage for the UK... It worked fine but never seemed to me to be quite as musical as the first unit I reviewed for Hi-Fi World over a year ago. I took off the base and true enough it was set to the 220V setting on the mains transformer. I changed it to the 235V setting which was easy enough with a soldering iron (just desolder it from one pad and re-solder the wire to the correct pad). Hey presto the musicality is now the equal of the original machine I reviewed.

The OPA627s now sounded ALOT better - extremely impressive in fact, BUT I noticed they get VERY hot very quickly. I thought this might be instability but the sound remained absolutely fine. However concerned about future reliability I decided to use the OPA2227s instead and so far I'm very happy. Not QUITE as good as the 627s but I'd say 90% of the performance and the chips do not get as hot to the touch. Can't wait for the new LM4562 chips everyone seems to be raving about them - nice price as well.

I'll let you all know how they sound in the Shanling hopefully by the end of next week.

Cheers,

- John

If the 627 is getting hot and the 2227 not, the 627 could be oscillating. Can occur with a fast opamp. Best is to decoupled very good, and close PS pins. I just bought 4 Nx caps from Black Gate, the're gonna do this decoupling task in CDP. The standard BG's i soldered in tube phono stage do i like a lot allready.
