Thanks everyone!
So.... one of the big reasons I'm getting into this is because my late father LOVED this stuff. Unfortunately as he passed when I was young a lot of cool stuff got given away (mint condish HRO, AR88 to name a couple)
But on the mention of a VTVM..... I still have something very similar to this
Voltmeter Ohmmeter Heatkit VTVM Model IM-28 120V Mains | eBay
You are right, I didn't know my equipment properly. But perhaps this will work.. it would be quite poetic!

The IM-28 is an excellent tool.
Do you have the probe? It would be impossible to replace and hard to duplicate.
Considering a disused IM-28 will need some freshing-up, and you are already "challenged", I would still shop for a DMM. I have seen some usable ones at $3, though $30 buys a better tool.

i heard from Nelson Pass in one of his lectures, he was too lazy to do math nowadays so that he just used variable pots to adjust to his desired operating point, and then take the pot reading and stick in the nearest value resistor....
