@PMA

kgrlee has mentioned several times. First we find the true GPs, then we listen to his comments. This comments is what we are after.

Many blind test listeners can pick up differences only by focusing on certain small part of the recording, and you're right, this means nothing.

So what is your comment and analysis of the difference?

It is very strange to me that anybody who can hear the difference of the two files do not have any preference!?

It may mean one does not like any of the samples. Despite that, I have voted later for the one which I assumed more acceptable to me.

In this case, I would run screaming before listening to either file for any length of time.

I'm not going to vote in this poll as I think I have a fairly complete idea of what is going on from looking at the waveforms.

I would just say to vote on which you actually prefer based on sonics. There is no right and wrong answer.

I don't like either and under no circumstances would ever voluntarily listen to anything that sounded like that.

My impression was very similar to one of the spoiler comments above.

One thing I noticed was that the difference was immediately apparent but as I listened and switched between the tracks it became less and less obvious.

Then, after I read the comments and did the waveform analysis I could hear it again.

Now my ears are both ringing and I have a headache.

I would be careful listening to these files. I think they may damage your hearing.

Strange, I found one of the file is so lovely and so convincing (sonic on the drum). I played for so many cycles at very low volume until somebody complained and I had to turn off the speaker. I'm at "public" computer at work where there is only one speaker available.

But I'm not going to vote based on this 1" speaker for sure (PMA has disqualified it). Just strange that I have different impression with the others.

I've just played both again to see how they sound (new day new ears 😀) and they both stand up well imo. Yes there is a difference sonically, and that is what the question is really... which do you prefer ?

Do you want me to vote based on the 1" speaker and Realtek onboard soundcard???

Everyone can try to listen on the drum attack after "Now you know that you are real...". It's clearly frightening on one of the file. You know how frightening a real drum attack is (I hear a real drum everyday this last week, friends are preparing a live performance for next 10 days)

The files Mooly had posted will make no hearing damage to anyone.

People can take a look and make up their own minds:

Your analysis is partial and flawed. The signal he posted will make no harm to anyone!!!

Such signal components are very often present in the music files people buy on CD or download from web shops. Just worse immunity to RFI. Very usual!!

That has to be an artefact of the Acer laptop used. The level of that spike is very low ? yes ?

The main audio of the file is at least -30dB so people will naturally raise the volume to compensate. After that, the spike might be higher volume than you would normally get at that frequency perhaps.

Maybe it's OK. But certainly worth being careful. I wouldn't do extended listening with these files.

Thanks Pavel.

Not sure if this will work but here is a 30 second wav file of "silence" recorded on the Acer with the inputs shorted for anyone wishing to analyse it.

Hi Mooly,

yes you have it there, quite usual in PC internal sound cards in the slots. Try to isolate connectors from frame or different slot position. It is a tough job sometimes.
Also, it looks like the card works in 16-bit mode. Drivers installed?
