Speaking of helping. I got a little something at Disney World for our resident helper. 🙂

Once again, I'm sorry I chimed in to offer help.

If the experiment is to determine how poorly the part will work without goop then you're headed in the right direction.

That really depends on the quality of the two mating surfaces.

I'm not necessarily in disagreement with you. Don't take it the wrong way.

I do thermal analysis work for a living.

I haven't preached anything here. No need for anyone to get upset.

If you do thermal analysis for a living then you certainly don't need me to explain the virtues of thermal paste.

Upset? Please don't be silly. I'm enjoying your tutelage as much as anyone here. I'll just be more careful to chime in only when it's within my wheelhouse 🙂

I honestly have nothing teach, only something to share.
I've never said anything against thermal paste.
It's fairly labor intensive to get a better result without using it, but it's certainly possible.

Surely you appreciate the term "I did it my way".

Also, yes, I can relate to sometimes wanting to learn things the hard way for my own personal edification.

It's not always the hard way, I call it the experimenters way 🙂. Most of the time you go in knowing what the likely result will be, but sometimes you make new discoveries, or prove it wasn't a mountain but rather a mole hill.

I better buy the rest of the parts for this amp if I'm going to ever complete it. 😀

In fairness, I asked you to stop, and I've tried to be sensitive. However, if we must continue.

Where have I said thermal paste does not work?

You didn't. You implied by inference that it serves a purpose in electrical insulation and that it is optional, which are both incorrect.

Maybe a silly question, but is there " thermalgrease" between transistor and heatzink ?

You posted on a public forum, ostensibly sharing info about your attempts to work through an on-going problem with the BAF Amp, which I applaud you for. Since the topic was thermal performance, the poster asked a simple question about thermal interface material.

I have tried both.
These things are electrically insulated so no need to worry.

Followed by:

Yep. People should do what ever they feel comfortable with

Your initial response suggests you might have been confusing the role of thermal paste. And, your follow-up might, to the casual passerby, seem as if you're suggesting that thermal interface material is optional. Since you're posting in a public forum it seemed it might be helpful to clarify for the sake of others who stumble upon these posts.

The point of the thermal grease is to improve the contact between the part and the heatsink, probably a pretty good idea here.

Innocuous enough, no? I didn't quote you, and my comment was not directed at you, but rather the general audience who might be confused by your remark. Then you quoted me and added this:

I tend to derive the best solution through experimentation based on real data.

Good for you. Actually, it seems you may be the one who gets offended by advice. Are you suggesting the guys who invented TIM's "didn't derive the best solution based on experimentation based on real data" If you want to re-invent the wheel, I celebrate your enthusiasm, but surely you don't mind if I share sensible advice with our friends here. Advice, incidentally, based not on my personal opinion, but the actual findings of thermal specialists.

You, of course are free to proceed in any fashion you prefer. Likewise others are free to offer their own observations and advice, just as you do.

*End of reply

Attached is a document for the the general use of readers at large. You may take away from it anything you like. I'm am not the author.

The conclusions are on page 6 if you'd like to skip ahead.

Hint: Use goop. 🙂

You love debating don't you.
Lmao.
Have fun with that.

I have no interest in this sought of discussion.
You can interpret what I have said how ever you want.

I thought I was having a friendly chat.
Your ego has gotten the better of you on this occasion.

Let the GLADIATOR work, he has experience enough....🙂

All these points were already discussed when Steve made his experiments.

Of course I did not see ZMs brilliant advice .....🙂))

Based on my observations so far, I'm quite confident the devices will work quite well in Nelson's circuit without too many headaches.
I can post curves of Id vs Vgs but I'm guessing that won't interest too many people.
I'll place the order for the rest of the parts to build the amp.
