B1 Buffer Preamp

Hi everyone,

I’ve just completed building the B1 buffer and wanted to share my impressions. I used matched 2SK209GR JFETs, and the result is far better than I expected.

Even with a simple Topping TP22 amplifier, the sound improved dramatically. The music feels more alive, details are clearer, and I started hearing vocals and instruments I hadn’t noticed before. It really brings out the subtle textures — B1 feels like magic.

I used PTFE-insulated signal wires for internal connections. They were a bit stiff and tricky to work with during soldering, which required some extra care, but in the end, it was well worth the effort.

Initially, I had a ground loop issue with the SMPS, but it was significantly reduced when I reversed the polarity of the 220V laptop adapter plug.(Topping Tp22 also have smps so 2 of them caused noise IMHO)

One interesting thing: I’m using a 20k pot (log ), and there was noticeable noise when it was around the middle position. However, when the pot is turned all way up (maximum position), the noise almost disappears.

I’m planning a few next steps:

Try the B1 with a Quad 405 as a power amp.

Power the B1 with a Jung Super Regulator.

Also considering building a DCB1.

Though, I’m not yet sure if building a DCB1 will still be necessary once I power the B1 with a Jung regulator — that’s something I’ll evaluate later.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!
