If I can hear (the effects of what I believe is NFM) what do I care what percentile of the population I'm in? Enough people report the same that I find it interesting enough. You're self-proclaimed not interested in listening so don't know why it should bother you/exercise you so?

Where did you get that idea, I enjoy listening very much and have no problem saying either I can't hear any difference or the difference is here today gone tomorrow and not worth my effort to pursue it (if that is the case). In either case I already said I don't listen to anything digital with any special expectations so DAC's and their misbehaviors are simply of intellectual interest, that is I would gladly help others satisfy what they are pursuing.

More nightmare than illusion - there's something strange about how her mouth hardly moves (hardly opens her mouth much)?
The speech to song illusion didn't work for me. It was just repetitive words but nothing song-like.
In the 'phantom word' illusion I didn't hear any words, just a continuous electronic 'weh-weh-weh'.
No idea what she said at the end either. I heard 'See you next cough-day'.
The ascending or descending one was just that: Sometimes ascending, sometimes descending. I didn't keep score when it was ascending or descending though.

There are other interests, I was thinking of having a Japanese sword maker make me a custom kitchen knife (starting at $3000) but he won't do left handed ones.

Anyway, I was thinking about the "perceptual narrowing" concept where, at about 6 months, we begin to diminish the brain's neurological pathways that aren't used regularly & reinforce those that are. It's the ultimate evidence for the brain being a natural pattern search engine. As a result we begin to focus more on environmentally pertinent sounds & sights - we can differentiate the specific sound nuances of our native language ( non-native speakers miss these completely, unless trained).
So if we were to ask native English speakers to differentiate some of the sounds in Hindi language they couldn't do it - it would require training to be able to achieve this (such is the plasticity of the brain).
It got me thinking about a number of wider aspects related to this "perceptual narrowing";
- this narrowing is not confined to just perception, it applies to mode of thinking, attitude, etc - we become 'stuck' in certain ways of thinking & behavior, etc. Some people embrace this fixation & become 'old' before their time - they need this fixed position to be comfortable in life
- I know OStripper & Myself have taken LSD & I believe what is happening with the drug is that the diminished, seldom traveled neurological pathways are activated. As a result we see visual patterns in ordinary, everyday sights like a concrete sidewalk. Only recently it has been proven that the LSD molecule binds to our serotonin receptors & the receptor partially folds over it, keeping it in lace for a long time - hence the long acid trips.
- I could also talk about how we are stepping outside our normal, everyday listening habits when we are doing ABX blind tests & it's not unusual for non-trained listeners to return null results but I fancy that will just attract pie fights 😀
