Hi alchemist,
Cool, thank you. I have hope then.
I was looking for the item I need at rswww but was unable to locate it, I looked for rs stock number 233-218 and also the link you posted but could't find it.
I have never made a cable end before, so i guess i also need to know what wires what on the pc end of the cable too ( i imagine i can buy a spare at radioshack or rswww which will come with a pinout as well )
I have used a soldering iron and messed with wires before so i think i can sort it out.
Thanks for your help here, this is great.

Need more power Scotty !
Thanks for the part number alchemist62, I found one and that will sort out 1 of my 2 missing parts.
Now for the power supply, So my panel takes a 2 pin adapter, not a 5 pin like all the other ASK impact panels, so the connection is not an issue because it's the same size plug as many home electronics and computer stuff uses, but WHAT IS THE VOLTAGE ?
No one seems to have any info on the 16.7 model panel, the 400, WSX etc...no problems, PDF user maunals galore, but not for mine, how can I find out what the specs are for the power supply for my panel ?
should I try to figure it out from the pinout diagram from the other impact panels ( although they are all 5 pin din plugs ) and try to match it up as close as I can,
Would this damage the panel if I turned it on with the wrong power supply ?
Thanks for all the input so far, I am still encouraged that this thing will work.

Got power....now what ?
Hi all,
Well just got an e-mail from my dad in the UK, well he finaly heard back from a dude at some ASK dealership in UK and he told my dad he thinks the power should be 12 volts 3 amp.
So my dad had a power adapter with these specs and pluged it in and turned it on, heres what he said (my dad):
" I tried my one from my lcd monitor the on/off light comes on and the fan power up when you put it under a light as it should but the mode button dos nufin and the on/off button dosen't switch it off ? low /med/dark / colour button don't do nufin ether
the light saying low stays on the other wheel adjustment don't make any change, so all in all not too encouraging ??
can you find out on your forum if you are supposed to see any thing when there is NO lcd input, from some one who has one.
there is a small led that you can see on the back sticking upon front of the lcd screen but that didn't show any signs of life but it may be a ifer red one any way we still my be ok tho ?? keep your fingy things crossed "
So, should he see an ASK logo or something, even if there is no input ? I hope not, otherwise I may have a DUD... Damn...
Please Advise ??

Hi Motoracer,
If the panel powers up with no signal, you should get an Ask logo pop up on the screen. It defaults to the vga port on mine at powerup.
I hope this info helps ?? Good Luck with your panel..........

my ask impacct 400 panel does not give any splash screen or logo. if there is no signal all the pixels go black. get your lead made and plug it into the computer thats the only way to tell.
Thank-you
Thanks cosmic023 and alchemist62,
Well that is encouraging alchemist62, I will go ahead and make my cable and then try the panel. I hope it works. At least I got it to power up now, I feel I am half way there now (as far as the panel goes, now I need to find the OHP).
Thanks for your input and advise guys.
I think the harder this is to get it going...the sweeter it will be watching my first movie with it.

Hi Motoracer,
I've got a 400w Halogen OHP here that's going onto fleabay soon, but i'm sure you can get a similar unit where you are ??
After using a 400w OHP & Descaler in my HTPC, the quality from my Impact 24 panel was amazing till it burned out !!
But i'm going to move onto the next stage, and get a 2nd hand CRT projector.
Good luck with your panel.
Cheers

IT'S ALIVE
Good news, I am making progress, the specs for the powersupply are 12 volts dc out at 3.0 amps.
My dad just finished the cable and presto, it works, see photo.
After the windows logo, it goes off though and my dad can't see anythig else, just a flash of his wall paper when he turns it off.
I suspect the screen size has to mach from the pc to the panel, and its off so it displays nothing after the pc loads the user settings ( screen size ) part of windows.
So with some fiddling with settings, and the mode selector on the panel, I am quite sure it will be fine.
At least it's powered now, and there is a windows logo showing up, the rest is small potatoes.
I am so excited now, this is freaking awsome.

MY PANEL ARRIVED
Hi Guys,
Well my ASK 16.7 LCD projection panel arrived a few days ago, got the power supply sorted, and borrowed the work overhead to test it out.
Freaking amazing.... I love it, and the OHP is only an apollo horizon 2 (single lens and 2000 lumen) so I am looking forward to trying my OHP (when it arrives - been almost 7 weeks since I won auction...anyday now) I am waiting for an Elmo HP4k-DX, (triplet lens, 4000 lumens) sholud give me a brighter, sharper image.
Just from placing the LCD ontop of the OHP , nothing else, I was more than happy with the movies i tested.
I do have a few concerns though....
after 2 hours of being on it (the LCD panel glass) seemed quite hot, you could still easily place your hand on top or bottom of glass with out painor burns, it was just hotter than I expected it to get, (the panel fan runs fine).
Also there is 1 pixel that is always white i think or clear, but thats ok, could only notice on dark, non moving scenes.
I though the panel would be able to show 800 x 600, seems I can only get 640 x 480... fine for movies, but none of my PC games will run, the screen just goes all black....even MAME !
Mind you, I have not spent that much time fiddling with it yet, as soon as I got my WIN-XP desktop at 640 x 480 at 60 Hz i stopped tinkering and watched the hulk, and toystory 2 with my son....(He's amazed, it's worth it just for him to enjoy his cartoons on!)
So all in all I am very happy with the panel (well maybe except i wish I could get 800 x 600 so I could play Vice City, but movies are the main reason I started this project, games would just have been icing on the cake, or extra gravey if you will)
As soon as I get my Elmo OHP, I will get my set-up working as good as I can and the take some pics or video and post the results here (in the results thread).
One more thing I found a few weeks ago at Value Village (thrift store) was a portable tripod projection screen 70" diagonal matte white for $25 CND...SCORE !!! So that answered all my how and where am I gonna paint a screen questions I was tring to figure out from all the post's on plastex and screen goo etc....also now my whole set is portable (more or less) it will be great for the back yard movies in the summer.
Ok thats it, just though I would post an update, I am so excited, I just had to tell someone.
untill my elmo arrives....

Re: Games
It seems my games do run at 640 x 480, I did not try them on the panel but on my monitor last nite, MAME, simpsons hit and run, motocross madness etc... all play fine at 640 x 480, i don't know why the LCD panel goes all black though when I start a game on it, I can hear all the game sounds so I know it's running, I just can't see any thing.
So with a bit of fidiling, I am sure I will be able to get these games up on the big screen, any tips as far as settings would be helpful.
My panel has a few buttons and knobs on the front to play with, there is a mode button (2 positions) a tint, level and color adjustment dial, there is also and adapter button with a counter beside it that cycles through 0 to 9 when clicked (pressed), i am assuming that that is for pre determined or user setting modes or something.
Any insight would be helpful.

Games Work Now
Well i played around a bit more with the settings and got mame and some other games working, I had to start each game on my monitor and change the video options to 640 x 480 then save and exit setting and game, then next time I started the game with the LCD panel attached, it started in the right resolution, so now I am a happy camper.
And I think my OHP arrived, I have a package waiting at the post office for me, unless it's a package for my son, were both expecting one, so fingers crossed, it's mine.
Will post some result images next week (if it's my OHP at the post office)

Hi All,
I just listed a NovaCorp ASK 16.7 LCD Panel on ebay.com.au. The link to my auction is;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=32862&item=3070166023
I hope someone can get some good use out of this machine. I am amazed to see they were over US$6000 when new!

It works Great
Hi all,
Well I got my games to run, I had to start the games at a higher res and then change the opions in each game to play to 640 x 480.
Vice city, motocross madness, MAME all are fantastic on the big screen, well except my colin McRae rally, after 1/2 hour I have to stop cause I get car sick ( i think I may be playing to close to the screen -- hehe )
I have already burnt out the first bulb and am onto the back up bulb ( my OHP came with both bulbs with unknow hours ) so I am gonna get a few more from bulbman next week.
I have no pictures to post at the moment but I did record some video of my son watching monsters inc. Its an mpeg 1 file about 7 MB, and it can be found here:
http://members.rogers.com/jacobezra/LCD_TV.mpg
just open win media player, under file > open URL... > paste the above URL into box, and hit ok. (please excuse our cluttered house, it was the day after x-mas I belive)
Today is tuesday Jan 6, this video will only be there for a few days because I will need the webspace for my x-mas video (when I have finished editing it and stuff)
You will notice a hot spot I have not even tryed to fix yet, well I did try a bit of tape, but I could the see the outline of the square bit of tape (it did diffuse the hot spot nicely though) so what I need is a round bit of tape the size of a quarter, that is like a radial gradient that tapers from the centre to nothing on the outside, I know good luck finding that type of tape. I am thinking of clear paint or something to apply to the OHP stage glass itself with a brush so I can kind of feather the outside of the circle so it will blend in. Or my other idea is to use a OHP transparensy sheet, on the glass stage and use fine sand paper to rough up a circle rite above the hotspot, cause i will have control of how hard I sand so I should be able to make a gradient diffusing circle above the hotspot.
One more thing worth mentioning, I was pretty happy with the set-up, however I did notice the lens and mirror on the OHP were rather dusty (in fact the whole OHP lens head glowed when projecting) not wanting to damage the lens and mirror, I waited a week or two untill I remembered to buy a lens cloth from a glasses shop. Cleaned it all up and WOW, what a different --> colors were better and the whole picture was way brighter and sharper. So i have learned that a clean lens and mirror make a huge difference, I was not expecting much more, untill I cleaned.
Now I am gonna work on a getto shroud (seen some before-and-after shroud photos from some other post on here, and it makes a big difference too).
I still intend to post some good pics in the results thread one day soon, untill then have a look at my short video.

hey Moto Congrats on the setup( I know the fist time I had My lcd projector( have a actual projector in the basement theater and a panel in other room) I sat there for prob 40 min just staring at it and thinking to myself, man I never in my dreams thought I would have something like this. Just think in like 20 years we will have something crazy like video wallpaper( hey it could happen) look how far we have come in the past 20 years, Its crazy But In a good way😀
Suggestion-What You Might try for a dud pixel.
Hi Moto,
I smiled reading your thread, its great to see the kids get the kind a thrill from the big toys as we get huh? I was thinking about your dead pixel in the ASK panel.
I have a Multimedia Bureau and a bit of experience with colour balancing for clients brochures and their websites. I was thinking, rather than a stick or paint on solution for your dead pixel you could try this.
Get someone who uses Photoshop or Corel or Fireworks or some such and show them the problem. It would be pretty easy using the feathered airbrush tool to create the following.
Imagine you have a clear plastic transparency for your OHP that you drew a texta spot on that transparency as a template to locate the pixel that was the problem on the ASK panel.
Now you put the transparency in an inkjet printer to create a template document in (For e.g. ) Photoshop. Once the document is created and saved, you can identify the exact o-ordinates in pixels of the spot that is the problem by trial and error printing a simple bit map mask on the OHP transparency and refitting to the OHP to test. Use a grid, and place a number on the page with a solid round 3 pixel white or red or black spot where your original texta mark was.
With a few sheets of transparency, you will quickly locate the exact co-ordinate of the dud pixel relative to the installation position of the ohp transparency on teh projector or panel (whichever works best with the heat etc).
Having the exact spot, your photoshop power user (including nearly any copy shop) could take the document you created and convert the solid dot to a feathered airbrsuh tip spot exactly the right clour and blend of gradient opacity on the outter feathering of the airbrush such that the net result will be a mask for moderating the colour of the dud pixel to suit your need.
If you have a specific game that you play, you can then do a FILE SAVE AS and copy the file then change the colours to suit the background of the game.
In theory, it will take soemon with a bit of patience a couple of dollars of transparencies and you can make a set of masks to suit all your different gams and one for movies as well.
This will give a nearly perfect result as the inkjet printing at say 2400 x 2400 DPI will make a nearly seamless image mask for your white spot.
If another pixel should fail, you simply revert to your original grid, overlay it on the mask as well, and locate the second dud, then overprint using copy and paste to replicate the feathered edge airbrush radial gradient fill partial opacity (at say 65%) and make the white spot pretty near disapear..
Hope this helps.
🙂 Shoot me an email if you need help.

Hi 4ming
Thanks for the tips 4ming,
I think you may have mis-understood my ramblings though.
My panel does have two dead pixels, one almost on the outside so it's hard to see, and the other is in a corner, only obvious in some scenes, really can't tell, and not a real distraction to worry about.
The solution of puting something on the overhead glass stage was to correct a HOTSPOT. In the very centre or the projection is a bright spot about the size of a quarter, that is brighter than the rest of the image, a bit distracting sometimes. It is caused from the fresnel lens rings i think? the very middle rings are so small, they cant difuse the light properly. A small square of the invisable (cloudy type) tape diffuses the spot nicely but now you can see a square outline of the tape, hence my solution of a gradient needed to kind of feather out to nothing, to avoid the outline.
Another picture of hotspot
Here's another picture showing my hotspot.
It's not a huge deal, if I can correct it cheaply and without risk I will, but if this is as good as my set up will ever be, I am still a very happy guy.
These are stills I grabed from a short MPEG movie I made of my setup with my camcorder. Movie is Monsters Inc.
