Hi All,
I'm looking at an Ask Impact 16.7 LCD Panel on ebay, but it doesn't have a power supply.
Does anyone know of a pinout for it ?? The seller states it's a 2 pin connection.
I've got an Ask Impact 24 power supply, which is on a 5 pin din. The Inpact 24 i own has a faulty lcd panel, so i'm looking for another suitable lcd panel to replace it. or Just get another overhead LCD panel.
I can provide the pinout for Impact 24 PS if required.....
Does anyone has a copy of the manual for the Ask Impact 16.7, or know of a URL ?? I could find the pinout from that ??
The details of the LCD Panel in the ASK Impact 24 is a Sharp 8.4"

The URL of the Impact 16.7 on ebay can be found here.
Many thanks

Hi Alchemist62,
I've already been to the Ask link you've posted, but i didn't find a manual for Impact 16.7.
There was a few numbers posted for service centers in the UK, so i'll try these first. And see if they can do a power supply for the Impact 16.7 panel, if not i'll see what the pinout / voltage is for this panel. I'm hoping to use my Impact 24 PS if it uses the 5 pin din connection. Most of the Impact series uses this type of connection.
I'll also ask them about a replacement lcd panel for my Impact 24 Panel.
But i thought i'd try here first to see if anyone had answers to my questions.
Many thanks for the help
Cheers

Hi Gregory27,
My Ask Impact24 panel has a faulty / failed lcd panel, check out this thread.
Since posting this thread, the lcd panel quality / fault has got worse, and looks like it's in the wrong resolution and has a purplely / green tinge to everything ??
So i'm going to ebay it, unless you can make me an offer for it ?? I've tried contacting Ask, and they said 'No chance of any spares, as we cleaned out any spares for lcd projection panels, many years ago.'
I've tried to source another projection panel of the same type, or just replacing the lcd screen itself, but i've had no joy on both accounts.
But i've decided now, to buy a Seleco SVP 350 CRT Projector as my next upgrade.
Thanks for your help anyway.
Cheers

Hi Gergory027,
Thanks for the info & the link, yeah that lcd panel is VERY cheap. The downside is i haven't found nothing like this on the UK version of ebay.
If i could replace the panel this cheap, i'd go ahead right now and buy something.......but i've been looking for ages and have found nothin'.
One other thing, is it easy to get it connected and working ?? Is it a case of plug in & off you go ?? Or is it more dedicated than that ??
I'm still going to upgrade to CRT, but at least i can get some big screen entertaiment back, while i'm saving for a CRT unit !! 😉
Cheers

I bought that ASK IMPACT 16.7 LCD Panel
Hi All.
My first post.
Well I have entered this DIY LCD projector world now, and there's no turning back.
I got a glass bead screen for a buck..a LCD panel for 54 quid...now I just need an OHP and I am good to go.
One snag... no power supply !
I ( my dad ) bought the ASK impact 16.7 panel from E-bay UK on the weekend and needs a power supply.
On the www.ask.no website i found PDF user mannuals for the impact 400 and the WSX, the black and white diagram of thoses two look exactly like the one I got (am getting) but no listing of the 16.7 model I have (will have) . However I did find a review of that exact panel here [http://www.onlinemag.net/OL1995/MayOL95/connolly.html] (thats why I wanted it, got a good review, over 6 grand new in 1996) so that model must exsist(ed).
Unless there is a sticker missing from mine and it is in fact a 400 or WSX model, anyhow...the power supply for the 400 and WSX are the same, so I belive that any powersupply for any ASK IMPACT LCD panel will work with mine.
Am I right or way off base ? I hope I can get this thing to work, cause I am so excited to get a big screen in my small house.
I first came across this whole scene by stumbling onto the $20 bigscreen plans...upon further research realised that my wife would laugh and say I told you so when it failed, so I needed to do it right the first time (she's a skeptic for most of my brilliant ideas) So i found this place and was amazed by the pics of peoples results, and realized THIS is the way to go, not the fresnel and cardboard/ductape on your upturned TV route.
Understanding that the LCD quality is the origin of a great picture, I wanted a good screen, found a few on e-bay, read up on them and found a nice review (link above) for one I could get cheap, but no power supply.
So I have gambled and told my Dad (lives in UK) to try to get it, he did. Now I am trying to find my power supply, can anyone help, I am waiting for a reply from the guy at ASK in Norway regarding a PS but thought I would check if anyone here has one that may work for me ?
Sorry for the long post, but it's my first one here and I just wanted to thank everyone here for the great advise and reading (and photos that inspired me) and am looking forward to becoming an active member in this forum.

Hi Motoracer,
Welcome to the forum.......
As for you Ask power supply problem, i've already chased a few Ask service centres here in the UK looking for a replacement lcd panel for my impact 24, i was also looking for a impact 16.7 power supply as well, but no longer need that now.
I hope you get a p/s for your panel, as when i was asking around, i didn't get much joy !! 🙁
Good luck anyway, let us know how you get on.......
Cheers

Hi Cosmic,
I hope I can track one down too, not encouraging that you have already tried and couldn't though ...
I think I will take another gamble and try to get ANY ASK IMPACT LCD panel power supply.
I belive these are the specs:
INPUT VOLTAGE 100 to 250 VAC
OUTPUT VOLTAGES +5VDC, +12VDC, -5VDC
CONNECTOR 5 pin DIN male
I have also contacted some power supply websites looking, but they seem to need more info than I have (above), they want to know the amperage and current for the 3 power pins ? I am no electrical engineer so I have no idea. One place told me this may work - would it ? here is the webpage it's on and it's called the "DESK WART" http://www.alltronics.com/power_sources.htm
Is it that hard to use a universal PS of some kind from radio shack, or have one made/hacked etc...?
If anyone knows of one for sale please let me know. Cosmic, if you end up giving up on your ASK panel ( or buying your CRT ) please consider selling the PS to ME.
Thanks in Advance

you should check voltages of a few...
in regards to building homemade power connector for ask(MY BEST GUESS IS THAT THIS IS THE SAME PANEL IS THE IMPACT WSX), you could use an old pc AT power supply like what they do for building proxima ppanels, and just use the voltages in the ASK manual, mine is the impact 24, i think they are the same for all ASK ppanels, check a few of thier manuals to see(i would look at your panel, and the pictures on ask website manuals and just try to match which manual looks, and performs like yours)
Cosmic, check for an old compaq lte to find your lcd cheap use the part# on ebay,or model #, buy the laptop and take apart, taking the lcd apart is very easy, 4 screws, and the trick is removing the white plastic backlight holders from it(IF YOU SEE A CHEAP ONE IN THE U.S EBAY EMAIL ME I COULD BID FOR YOU AND HELP YOU OUT)

Hi Motoracer,
Been there, done that !!
I've got a faulty Ask Imapct 24 (Needs a replacement LCD panel), but all of the Impact series apart from the 16.7 unit uses a 5 pin din plug, and the 16.7 uses a 2 pin plug. Not sure what type of plug though ??
After all that was what i was hoping for myself when i found a 16.7 unit on ebay without power supply, and use my power supply to power it !! 🙁
When i talked to Ask, i asked them about this and they stated the 16.7 unit was a new design, and the power supply was modified compared to other Impact designs, but it didn't work very well, that's why they kept the 5 pin arrangement on the other units.
I hope this info helps ??
Cheers

Hi Gregory27,
I would like some help on getting a suitable panel for my Impact 24 unit. The thing is, if you could get a panel like yours for a small price ?? (I doubt if you could get another panel like that for that price ??)
Two of the problems i have for using the US version of ebay is paying for goods, and shipping to the UK ??
I'd like to chat more about this, maybe we could work something out ?? Also i'd rather not pay for a whole laptop if i can help it, unless it's going for a silly price !!
Otherwise i'll be selling the whole lot on ebay, LCD Panel (inc P/S leads & hardcase) and a 400w OHP to raise funds towards my CRT projector !!
Cheers

you would get a lot more $$ if lcd worked ok
Just use the link i sent you to look for the specific models on ebay, you also could use the compaq part # to locally search for this, I have see a lot of Compaq LTE Lite(you need the correct model #!) for around 30US, i think that's like 10 lbs(is that correct)

Hi ,
Well my dad in UK recived my ASK IMPACT 16.7 LCD panel yesterday, looks in great shape.
First the good news: You're rite on about the PS Cosmic, it's indeed a two pin adapter, the standard type that goes into most electronics, so with a users mannual or a few specs, my dad should be able to get that licked (he fixes cash registers and point of sale equipment, so knows all about that kind of stuff and asures me once he knows the proper voltage for the output of the adapter, he can sort that out)
Now for the bad news: (not too bad I hope) Turns out that unlike all the other ASK impact panels, this model does not have a normal RGB analog video input (like a standard monitor) but a special 26 pin (3 rows) input from the PC to the panel.
I planned on just hooking up my old PC (with All-in-wonder tv tuner card) and running the video in and TV through that so i don't really need a video in jack.
Now I just have to track down the proper cable, I think this should be easyer to find than a specific power supply, i am thinking that all the ASK impact panels would use the same cable. Please advise me if this is not the case.
If any one has a spare or know where to get one please let me know.
I am waiting for a response from ASK in norway, and my dad is going to inquire at the ASK dealers in UK.
I am including a pic of the ONLY input plugs on this unit.

Hi Motoracer,
Thanks for the info, good luck with your P/S problem.
I think all the Ask panels have this type of connection, sometime over the weekend i'll try to get a pinout of the vga video cable i have for my Ask panel (Impact 24).

Cosmic,
By pinout do you mean this? ( in the attached pic. )
I have just been reading some posts on making custom cables...
From what I understand, I could make my own cable, all I need is this pinout? ( and a spare vga cable, soldering iron, and little pin things, oh and a multi meter )
Am I rite in asuming that?

i made a cable for my impact400 from the pinout diagram you have shown, works fine. I dont resend to a monitor though so it needs fewer connections. getting hold of the high density 26pin plugs is a little more difficult the only place i found was RS
