Art Car Sound System - A unique challenge

PhilB has actually been keeping a great record of what we've been up to at DIY Hifi over on speakerplans 🙂 There are some good pics there of the development of our 2 way box into a 3 way system... Check it here : TH & Unity Horn 24v wind & solar system - Speakerplans.com Forums - Page 1

Great thread mate! I had no idea some of the Aus crews had progressed so far in terms of size and off grid capability.

The real difference / challenge for us is trying to do an art car on the scale we currently have.
We could really use another trailer just for the Genny or battery setup. The aim is a roaming sound rig that we can park at pirate parties at festivals and kinda let the locals in each camp let loose for a few hours then move to the next.

A'la Robot Heart : Burning man... Just waaaaay smaller. Realisticly we might have to do a small rig as a proto in a single location then make it mobile next time. I am jelouse of your trailer rig btw.

As far as thread jacking goes... Be our guest. Any input / ideas / projects are welcome.
Our ethos is music for the people, so inspiring to see the solar/wind rigs running. We will have to come to one of your respective gigs and do some first hand research.

Might have to test some of that organic beer as well... Is it Deans Brew Co?

Hi all,

Quick update from us.

We went public about our build with this facebook page - people are keen to know more about the box with the tiny speakers in 😉

We have made contact with William Cowan of Cowan Audio who was one of the first guys to experiment with the original unity horn design when Lambda acoustics sold a kit with the celestion mids and a moulded waveguide.

He ended up building his into the walls of his living room. Pretty nice job too.

Hopefully he will come and help us measure and tune the system. We have tried with REW and a DBX but couldn't get a nice input signal even with amps and sound card cranked and sweeping at -6db. Now i think about it it might have been because i was sweeping through 500-20000hz, which would have taken the guts out of it. It was really windy and cold when were trying so hearts no in it.

Have read the whole of the DIY HiFI/trailer setup thread but the electronics side is a bit intimidating. Is there a thread/site with some basic discussion/tips for small mobile, off-grid solar wind systems as a starting point for looking into this side of things? There are 1kw complete off grid systems on ebay with inverters, regulator, 4x 250w panels and 4 batteries but not cheap at $4000 and only with a 1 year warranty.

xoc18 test party...

Hi guys,

A friend of mine Cameron is having a bit of a PA test party about 30ks out past Yarra junction on the 11th of October so we can have a play with and help tune his rig.

It uses :
  • 4 x xoc th18 boxes done up very pro,
  • 2 x 90 degree spread 2 way unity horns made originally by Paul Spencer of Red Spade and currently being fitted with new drivers
  • 2 x midbass boxes (don't know quite what these are yet)

I haven't heard the rig and I for one am interested to hear the 18s, so if any of you are similarly interested, let me know, and I'll see if he's up for some extras!

cheers,

Rich.

Four you say! I would love to come along, even for a few hours to say hello and compare notes!

I've ordered two B&C 18SW115's for TH18s for the artcar.

It's setup in the warehouse this week if you are about, lighting system is up and running!

Sounds awesome!

Do you know what drivers they are using on the unities?

4" Clestions on the mids - TF0410MR closed back ones. We used these too and they work great, but in a two way, you have to be careful not to push the low end, 'cos we damaged a few surrounds opposite the port holes probably due to high pressure and displacement there (crossing around 250Hz from memory). Spacing them out 1-2mm helps with the pressure, and raising the crossover helps too.

The comp drivers were 1" de250's, but he's put in some 1.4" B&C DE880TNs. In our experience a the 1" goes pretty well up to a point, but when you push it, it can get a but harsh and squawky between 1-3k depending on where it's HPF is set. Our first drivers (1" also) had a recommended cross of 2.2k and we were asking them to do 1.2. They sounded great to a point, but ran out of steam before the mids and subs, so we put some nice 1.4 RCFs in that Phil got for a steal 🙂.
