When I was there the winds are not so bad in the lake district parts of Patagonia. But I have driven from Comodoro Rivadavia on the east coast to El Bolson by the Chilean border, and there is nothing but wind and scrub and occasional guanaco.
Another good thing I forgot to mention. Argentina has good mountains.
