Hi Peter,
Nice looking portable and for $15, it looks like a steal.
I have an old Philips radio which my parents bought in 1969. I do not have a digital camera or I would have posted a pic.

You could cure the turn-on current ruch by connecting the system ground to earth through a thermistor (assuming the equipment is earthed). Some gotchas include the recovery time of the thermistor.

The local HiFi store has something like 5 used Naks in the back... from the mundane (BX100) up to at least an SX680, there may even have been a 1000... (i have 2 or 3 Naks so didn't pay a lot of attention)

2nd day on the job, i knocked a similar Sony R-R on its face (no damage thank goodness) and was branded "dangerous dave" something i am still called on occasion some 25 years later...

Re: Sansewage ?
Long before i saw a Stereophile we were calling their late 70s amps this. High feedback, high power, sounded like crap. lotsa knobs & switches and they sold quite well at the other stores selling stereo kit... put an Advent 300 or NAD 3020 or PS Audio up against them and they got eaten for breakfast... now some of the older Sansui tube stuff is really good (at least from the point-of-view of a good starting point for a Pheonix* tube-amp)

Re: Blast from the past
This one isn't mine, it's from Ben's Classic Audio site. I would post one of mine, but my camera's on loan.

I also have a 1060, 1090 and 5030B and when I see this sort of gear cheap, I usually get it just for some fun.
LOL. I saved and bought a Marantz 2285B as my first piece of hifi gear when I was in High School. I sold it several years later, when I 'upgraded', but always regretted it. Last year, I finally found another one in perfect condition, except for an odd dry cap, and the perennial dirty switch. I love the looks of Marantz gear of this era, and mine will be in my main system when it's complete, as both a tuner, and the poweramp for the bass horns. BTW, I tested my amp and found it puts out over 150W/ch (rated at 85W/ch) before there is any visible sign of clipping. Experience puts that at about 1%, and it's not a sharp clip either. Not too shabby for a stock 24yo receiver.HarryHaller said:I too plead guilty of nostalgia since I bought this from a pawn shop in S.C. over the net last year. The amp was my first piece of "serious" HiFi that I bought used when I was 17. The salesman was outraged that I wouldn't buy it until I actually listened to it!
Thank's for the reminder Peter.

I agree. This is a picture of my medium sized R2R (I have one bigger and smaller), a 1967 Ampex AG440B, still in excellent working order after over 30 years of Pro use.Peter Daniel said:Naks were good, but nothing like a nice reel to reel.😉 It also looks better than cassette deck.

Maybe because I couldn't afford it when it came out.😉 It basicly doesn't do anything, just sits on a shelf, but I like to look at it and remember good , old days.
Go to Tokyo and you will have a ball. You can send it by post. One of the Postmaster's in central Tokyo came out to greet me and gave me his card in case there was a shipping problem!!
Cool 80's
This one captures every dad that comes to my shop.
I've wished for a Galaxian coffee table since I was a kid, and the wish came true - it cost me a customer's video head clean and a few hours to get it going.
Now everybody I know wants it for their next party. 🙂
