Of course you can. Everything else should become i little bit difficult. Can I use some industry motor to build my turntable?
The platter needs to totate at 33 1/3 rpm. use a motor pulley of the right diameter to achieve that speed, or, use a motor with adjustable speed control. What motor speed do I need?
Hi,
i built my tt myself (Holger posted a link to my gallery of other diy tts above), you can read about the details on www.krishu.de > hifi > turntable
i built an unipivot tonearm wich performs at least significantly better than a Rega arm. I tried several approaches of motors and controls, ended up with a (internally) PLL regulated cassette tape deck motor, supplied with a standard LM317 regulatet P/S.
My Schroederclone (which is the best design for diy i suppose) is still in progress, too many projects at once.
my future plans regarding my turntable concern only motors. I want to try expensive Maxon motors and Papst motors later on. I got some response from the motor manufacturers and they told me which turntable manufacturers buy their stuff there 😉 The main problem with most motors is that these have ball bearings which are no-go for turntables. and the voltage-regulated maxon motors are difficult get speed-stable.
Cheers
Christian.

What material do I need?
Be creative! Look at commercially available arms, add your own ideas and start building.
Apart from that i think you better buy a cartridge, DIY is too difficult here.
Cheers
Christian.
