after letting the last amp
burn in and burn in for days....
I went to another expat with one of my gc's and 2 powersupplies.
we compared it to a rather expensive sansui (around $1.200 amp and pre amp) a Yamaha rxz1 ( i think it was) part of his home theatre set up and
all with yamaha and kef speakers....
first let me tell you guys, imho best sound still comes from my old quad 33 sys.
the best sound with nicest bass and crisp highs comes from the gc with low current trannies (28 Vdc & 1.2A) but limited volume.
then comes the sansui, I think the gc (with 38 Vdc & 8 A) is not as good but my friend thought it was a close finish and then the extremely expensive yamaha (which has so much features, he did not remember any without getting the manual on CD ...... ) maybe it's because the yamaha is so complicated that he may have missed some essential settings, well he only has had the HT rec. for 2 months...??? however, listening while watching Sade Live, did not sound bad at all.....

Re: after letting the last amp
J-P,
Thanks for the information. What was the difference between the GC's other than the PS?

Re: Re: after letting the last amp
well, maybe I wasn't clear... I only had one set of gc's with me but as 2 sets of powersupplies ( I always make my gc's independent from the powersupplies so that I can change this very easily (not really safe as I use bananaplugs but that is beside's the point here.
The different gc's I have made and all listened to are the semi ultimate and the one on which you gave advice of changing one of the R into 1 K etc.....
I have them here at home but frankly Greg, I cannot hear the difference with the different components. Beware when using 2 different sets of trannies (basler versus Abbott) then I hear a distinctive difference in favor of the Basler's.
I am looking further for other trannies that give me the sound that i get when using the Baslers from BGMicro but can give me more current = play louder!, and are not too expensive.
No kidding, I still am completely amazed by the result!
I am finishing decdun's amp from his website with the 432 K R's etc.. without volume control as I will probably use it with the cd or dvd player, both whom have volume control. I will have it finished tomorrow and then I can compare 3 sets.
The enclosure is not finished yet, that is going to be something Nec Plus Ultra!
J-P
I am taking at least 2 sets of gc's to the NW diy gathering with 2 different sets of trannies and a balanced line stage from NP so that I can hear comments of other diyers and pro's directly.
I played a cd from the Gipsy Kings (Salsa De Noche) again, and good gracious me, it sure sounds darn fine!

Oh boy
another request came my way this evening.
Some chick called me asking if I could make a compact amp for a bass guitar...
I have no clue but do you guys think I could make one gc alike? and what should I do to adapt it (if necessary????)

I think it can be done. But I'd try a bridged configuration for more power and maybe a bit more capacity in the supply. Maybe the GC is too tight for a bass-amp, a slow wooly SS amp might be the preference of the player. (but a lot can be done with a pre-amp 🙂)

I have no clue ....and
do I need to find out what brand of bass guitar she is talking about?

Ohm of the driver, efficency of the driver, general size of the room, type of enclosure for the bass driver. These are all things that must be considered when designing an amp.

good
gracious me,
lots of things to look for, I thought a GC (ir bridged GC) would do just fine!

Well if you are using 4 ohm drivers i would go with the Lm3886. If its a smaller room and you have a driver thats 95 db/watt/meter efficent i see no reason to bridge. If its a large room and you are using a single LF driver (its a gitfiddle) and the driver is rated for 100 watts then sure bridge the chips, just have lots of H/S and a good stable P/S.

OK OK i KNOW A LITTLE MORE NOW
it's for practicing church songs and will be used it in her home for practicing. Place is the huge rec area, very nicely decorated with pool table etc.... my guess about 30 by 50 ft,
She wants to have everything made and so we looked for El Cheapo, found a woofer ( 100 watss. 50-5000hz. 90db bl bla bla for $16 from all electronics.
I am going to have a look at the bass guitar specs this week but I think it was a '2nd hand' gift!
I think I will go for the 200 VA 25 volts trannie for one gc (ofcourse) or otherwise, bridged gc, but then ? how should i work larger trannie or 2 of the same?
I'll keep you posted.

I just finished my first Gainclone. To protect my speaker,I added a protect circuit(I buyed it and modified it),maybe that is overkill. I spent 2 weeks to build it .
Because of the parts in hand,I used
1.24VX2 150W trans for 2 channel
2.MR860X4(I buyed the used MUR860s,but got them
)
3.1000UFX4 is de-builded from the SMPSU by me
4.All resistor is de-build as well
5.ALPS pot (unque new part)
My GAINCLONE sch is similary to/based on this shc designed GregGC.GregGC sch
The sound is good,very good!
Thx GregGC,and the others.
The offset volt of R/L Cchannel is 2mv/9mv on min Vol,40mv/50mv on mid Vol,65/50mv on max Vol.
The PSU just finished:

Hi X.G.
How does your new GC compare with your JLH amps? Love to know the difference in detail...
Thanks,
Chris

Thank you remember my JLH, chris ma.
I want to compare them after over 1 or 2 weeks, cause I care to get the wrong answer.
but now I found the Gainclone is stronger than my JLH in low freq.
BTW: my best JLH isn't on my home,had....

X.G. Good to hear it worked fine for you.
How did you connect the Pot? As a shunt or a divider?

may i humbly suggest posting somewhat smaller pictures ? i am one of the so-called bandwidth challenged people (one of the few remaining in the netherlands)
what;s that "error" led burning for on the psu?

You are not alone! I am still using 28kps dial up modem..
I concur
