Gooday all,
Can anybody help with an easy driver circuit to drive analog VU meters. The amp has an output of +- 100watt and the meters I got from a Sony product. Their resistance is 1200 Ohms.
Thanks
Jan

If the meter has the rectifiers built in, then a series dropping resistor might be enough to get you going. If you needed a few different ranges, it could be a switch and a resistor.
Just for easy numbers, assume 0 VU on the meter was set up for 1 V rms.
A 100 Watt amp puts out about 28 Vrms max. If you wanted the 28 volts to correspond to 0 VU, put a resistor of 27*1200=32400 in series.
The meter, with such a resistor would probably never move until the volume was really high...so, that's where you might want a range switch...
you could even use "decade engineering". Throw a decade resistor box in series with the meter, all of which is hooked across the speaker terminals...adjust the R downard from 33K until you have the desired sensitivity.

Thanks for the reply's you all,
I found an easy circuit, I've tested it and it works fine ! Circuits Online - Schakelingen - VU meter It seems to work from the line inputs.
🙂

Nice one that one Vrystaat.
The 470uF(C4) directly to the meter will make most meters "hanging" up there.
Would not hurt to experiment a little with that one.

hi,
i am trying make a circuit based on the link you provided for stereo application and the same is attached. it would be nice if someone could comment on the same.

I built this also - Rod Elliott Project 55. Works very fine.
I can upload PCB if needed.

Hi Olaf,
Thanks a lot. I will this one.

Really nice!. Meanwhile, I had nothing better to do, I made a layout of the ckt that I posted.

simple one
Simple vu Meter Analog Circuit - HQEW.net
I think this is the circuit that our member Kaplaars uses in his beautiful little amps with Akai meters.

This the exact circuit i made a layout, only I added stereo and rectifier+filter cap.
Thanks for posting

Hi Jan,
Here is the pdf of circuit I posted. I replaced the gnd plane with traces. Hope it is useful to you.

Thank you Olaf !
Did you used the op-amp from the original 55 project or an equivalent one ?
