Hopefully a whole bunch of personal enjoyment (better if you can share the joy). If this doesn't improve your quality of life, it's worth reevaluating. What is the end goal of hifi?
(sadly with the caveat that our respective subjective experience is not generalizable)
WRT the subject in its entirety, certainly we saw a huge change in dynamic with COVID and a lot of the "old guard" has either retired from playing in audio or packed their bags for the afterlife. Personally, my project interest has gone elsewhere (house/furniture) especially as I've been 100% headphones for the past several years, and hope that at some point I'll catch the bug again and finish up old projects. Ebbs and flows.
Aside, and I blame Syn08 for this, on first reading this thread I was then humming tracks from an album I have not listened to since 1990 by a possibly little known punk band Subhumans. The tracks were buried in my mind and something dredged them up. Funny how long term storage works.
Thanks for the reminder, I vividly remember them; they pulled a new 'back to the roots' album in 2019. And check these kiddos, where do you brits pull this **** when less expected?
Inherent property of opinion is subjective.I only hold objective opinions.
You misunderstood what hi-fi is in audio reproduction. For hi-fi at least objective can go too far as well when it comes to entertainment or simply HID design. Goals of steady-state sine wave testing for lowest noise and lowest distortion are objective for sure, but don't always serve the end goal of hi-fi audio: entertainment and enjoyment. Just like eye-popping video displays which may not look exactly like reality; they may still be what the end user likes and wants.
Seems to you. A prime example of subjectivity. That's most often what seems to get posted as evidence of objectivity.
Wrong analogy in this context. It should be about the recreation of such spaghetti sauce and how close the recreated one is to the original. As I've diagnosed on your misunderstanding of certain term.'Better' is reserved for measurements? What if 9 out of 10 people 'prefer' something, say, a particular spaghetti sauce? Its not 'better' if you don't have a machine to measure why?
Maybe a bit off-topic but...
I've had dozens of people stop over the house through the years for various reasons, and also to sit and enjoy some music from my relatively decent stereo system.
Keeping in mind that these people are from all walks of life, and all have naturally different "preferences".
Also, keep in mind that these individuals were straightforward in their criticism, honesty of the music and sonic quality of the system.
My findings as far as I can remember were overwhelmingly positive as for the system, the music itself was a bit less (not everyone likes all types of music).
That tells me something about people in general - judging from the dozens spoken of.
And in the shop, our "lobby listening area" with its plethora of equipment on display and available for audition, had basically the same results - noting that many more people (in the hundreds) auditioned equipment.
Add to that, the several audio salons that I managed in Pa and NJ mirrored the above results.
So the bottom line to me is, the general public is satisfied with a broad area of quality when it comes to equipment, there's no real need to obsess over trivial details, or nitpick over measurements that only a piece of test equipment could show.

"If you define 'better' as 'I love it more' it's really not an objective judgement.
It's still purely personal preference."
How is your expectation that a circuit should perform in a particular way not a preference?

Huh??? I don't have circuit performance preferences, I have circuit performance specifications that should be met by design.
Unless you mean "perform" is a subjective metric like "sound", then "performance" is indeed a preference.

In my world, audio design refinement is still a daily challenge. I talk with people for hours, even today, about audio improvements, because we still find it interesting to do the best job possible. This website now appears to discourage any really new or refined circuit design. That is why I cannot contribute here as I once did.
That's marvellous.T And check these kiddos, where do you brits pull this **** when less expected?
I feel called out with the Ohm's law thing, so I'll take the opportunity to thank everyone who does take the time of their day answer the questions that might seem trivial to some. Abraxalito, Mark4, ecdesigns, Zen Mod, Didden, and others just to mention a few i had the pleasure to interact with, spent decades doing this, and are now sharing their knowledge just out of generosity, that is nothing to scoff at.[...]
it's not the bore of endlessly teaching the basics like the Ohm law, it's not the endlessly seeing the same dusty implementations of 50 years old concepts and circuit topologies, it's not reading again and again the same stupid/wrong advice and being tired of rebuking and streamlining the topics
[...]
Where else in the world can you get someone like Jan Didden to answer your stupid question not once, but twice, in a matter of minutes after posting, i ask you?
Now i just need NP to do one too and my "greedy boyz" career will be complete 😉
In return for being patient with noobies, noobies should become very friendly with the search function, i think that's at least fair.
Also just to add, i was one of the guys that was a bit skeptical of the new forum change and if it will lose the "feel" as well, but i gotta say the administration did a real good job on this one. Feature wise, the search is a lot better, posting (attaching images, inserting images in posts, editing) are all leagues better, watching threads, and the reply function are all leagues better... after changing the theme there is nothing to complain about. I think one of the emojis from the previous forum (the green grinning one) that was my favourite was not ported over, but i think i can somehow manage to cope without...
I felt off on the new forum for about a day or two then realized that it is all the same content and all of the same people are here. I do appreciate a lot of the new features. I have liked a few posts here and there.
I think the old platform was extremely simple and dry looking which gave you nothing to focus on other than the content. The new layout etc is a little more dolled up I got used to pretty quickly. Also, things have moved around etc.
The only issue that I have had was that I stopped receiving notification emails on all of my watched threads. I had to go to my watch list and look at all of them. Then the notifications kicked back into gear.

Being “objective”, as everything is in the measurements, is a subjective choice, so is in a sense, subjective.Being objective is an unrealistic ideal, much like the concept "perfection". The best things in life are inherently flawed.

Some Knowledge are dangerous. You need to know how to spot them so that you can filter those out.sharing their knowledge
This post is in a sense, nonsense.Being “objective”, as everything is in the measurements, is a subjective choice, so is in a sense, subjective.

Exactly. But comletely logical.
I expect we can find completely subjective (motartfan for example), but we will never find a completely objective.
Maybe sometime in the future. We ar eprobably at the early wood stove phase if we were talking cooking stoves. Our tools (and our understanding of the human ear/brain) need to significantly improv to get anywhere close.
