Hmmmmmm
Even the Great Pass looks at the price of vintage Altec 755a's turns pale and retreats to something more available and less costly.

Yes, the prices on 755A are beyond insane compared with historical norms...but still cheaper than many entirely unremarkable and boring high end speakers.

I have Altec's in the corner, TAD, JBL, Fostex and etc on the shelf and Pass in the listening position........ just the typical self torturing audiophile. It's all good, even when it's not!

My objection is that Altec used to be the working man's choice. Western was only moderately more expensive.
Now it is like collecting fine vintage watches or even vintage sports cars.
Sadly, my budget is still decidedly deep down in the 99%!!

I beg to differ. The Good'ol Altec A7 cabinet can sound pretty darn good when properly built and setup.

If you had a pair of 416C woofers, what cabinet would you make for them?
A traditional 5.5 cubic foot bass reflex box box with 2 circular 4 inch ports 6.5 inches long get you 3dB down at 46Hz or ...
Do a pair of Onken cabinets. Google 'Onken cabinet Altec 416' and you will get back a ton of info describing what you need to do and results to expect.
The big Onken is a great choice. My 416s are in an Altec 828 cabinet which I slightly prefer. Since I have 2 pairs, maybe I should build an Onken W.
I have the 825 plywood cabinets but with different gear and they are now a 3 way. I have wondered about the Onken cabinet, I was glad to see the suggestion. Any votes for the Model 19 cabinet?

I too beg to differ. There's just something magic about that cabinet. They don't measure well but they have something you don't hear in other cabinets. Not sure what it is, but there must be a reason it is still so popular and good for so many different woofers. For indoor use I found that I had to reduce the port in mine to about 75 in^2 🙂

In my best Homer Simpson voice: "Boorrring!" 😀
I think that's a little too close to the Altec 1234 system box. Not gonna cut it.

Pano is certainly correct in stating that what I have are Altec 828 cabinets. I have strengthened and tuned them to 30Hz. Given his history, I am sure that Pano has more insite into properly tweaking the 828 Altec cabinet than what I do!
The Model 19 cabinet was designed previous to 'Thiele/ Small' and is actually oversize for the driver used. The 5.5 cubic foot cabinet that I described is best tuning based on the Thiele/ Small params for the Altec 416C driver.
Michael, I am just looking for your and others wisdom before I start. 🙂
