Altec Lansing

Very nice! I love the 1505s, my favorite horn. At the moment I run 1005s and 288s.

I wonder what the sound wave launch would sound like in a diy wood copy of a 1505 or 1005, but without the multicells ?

I asked myself a similar Q way back when, cobbling together both an expo and conical variant, i.e. it looked like a tar filled one's shape, same as some RCA horns I’d seen. Both beamed, rolled off the HF way too much for my youthful ears, so tried a number of different [super] tweeter alignments, but found the audible two-tone delay too distracting, so ultimately opted for stacking dual 511/802 as a way to have the 805/288’s fuller mids with good HF performance and got more vertical pattern control as an unexpected benefit, which led me to experiment more about this aspect of radial design.

With today's digital delay, it's a viable option for putting the ST in the horn as proven by numerous prosound designs, though later experimentation convinced me that a conical WG design that ~eliminates throat distortion and accounts for this 'phase plug' is required for most accurate reproduction.

Now that some DIYers are documenting their attempts to reverse engineer some of DSL's Unity/Synergy multi-way horn designs, this is the way to go IMNSHO now that all but the worst of it is sorted out. Unfortunately, for now you’re on your own AFAIK if you want to use Altec compression drivers.

Thanks GM for all the great info 😎

Been doing so much reading lately in that massive Econowave thread at AK, but mostly the one at partsexpress "Flex Your PCD Mettle".. Looks like a EW was done for an Altec 414 driver I saw out there so far.. The more reading I've done around peoples impressions of the B&C 250 on the QSC WG, the more I seem to be thinking that may be a good option to try at some point?.. I sat down yesterday and read through all 70 pages of that PCD thread for the first time. Sure sucked to get more than halfway through it, and be engrossed by all the participants and info, only to come upon the time Zilch passed away 🙁

Well lots of good reading and most is way over my head, but I'm having fun a learning 🙂

Hi guys,
I need some guidance on some VOTT's I have a chance of purchasing.
this is what I was told by the seller

altec A7's cabinets restored nicely
Horns and drivers need restored
Woofers are either 421's or 422's. horns are H811-B with 808-8B drivers

I am waiting for more information and hopefully some better pics.

my question is what is a fair price with only this info?
what are the right questions to ask before I make a 4hr. drive?

thanks for any help.

For performance home music monitors, you will probably will want 416's so the 421's won't be worth much to you in the end .. if you are just needing sound reinforcement / PA, the 421 could be ok or if you are a bass player or keyboard for MI apps .. :sax: Ask to hear them demo'd. If they can't or won't, assume drivers are bad until proven different .. Also if they have no functional crossover for your application .. that would be a minus .. or a plus if you have basic skills to build your own with Pano's work / notes on his over at the Altec User's Board .. YMMV 🙄

you may also want to do what Pano & others do by adding a top horn so the 811 may not do much for you either .. depends on your plans ..

Are Iwata horns that good?

There was a set here in Canada with the particle board cabinets in good shape, 421's, 808's on 511 horns and a 1200 Hz XO?. I think Altec calls that the #1236. They were selling for $650 CAD. I passed on those but got the plywood cabinet 1233's instead. They of course were less money but I did need to tweak the XO as it was damaged.

Thanks for the help. It saved me from a lot of frustration.(money, work, etc.)
the 808's need rebuilt, one rear cover is broken. The list goes on, suffice to to say they apparently led a hard life.
I passed on this pair.
decent ones always seem to be across the country somewhere.
oh well

I've got a pair of 808 horns with drivers and xovers. I also have a pair of re'coned 412c's. I built ported bass refex cabs with the horns inside. They were 18x21x48 and worked pretty well. Starting over and trying to work up a back loaded, rear firing horn cab with the 808's inside. My first drawing was (again) 18x21x48 with the moth in the back and the 412 facing forward. I get a 5.4' long horn with an 18x18 mouth and a 2.9 cu' back chamber. I can also get roughly the same figures with the 412 and the mouth firing back. I can make the box taller. Any suggestions?
It's a little tough, as all I have is the Fs of the 412=30hz Anyone know the rest of the T/S?
