Alpair 5.3 best crossover / stop jumping

Hello audio loving people,

I have a question that I could not easily find (correct me if I am wrong) about the following:

I have a Mark Audio Alpair 5.3 full range driver 90 - 25.000 Hz - other specs are not relevant I believe, if so please ask.

I have tried building a High Pass crossover @ 100 Hz to try and prevent the driver from almost blowing up during the lower frequencies at higher volume.
(driver almost jumps out of its frame). This did not work. Should I try a 200 or 400 Hz High pass? Or am I missing something else?

Cabinet is sealed if that matters. (yes I am an amateur).

Yeah, a real 'problem' on any type of forum IME. 🙁

Anyway, ~95 Hz Fs, ergo in theory using 4 octaves away = 95*2^4 = 1520 Hz/1st order for most HIFI and 95*2 = 190 Hz/4th order for max protection with of course the 380 Hz/2nd order mean the most common.

In short, we ideally want it at least -24 dB @ Fs IME with minimal Xmax drivers, so 400 Hz is fine if 2nd or higher order is used.

That said I guess one can start @ the driver's rated Xmax and work forward or obviously anywhere in between if desiring some specific frequency.
 
I cross the much bigger 10.3 at 250Hz as this seems to be the best point in my experiments years ago. This smaller one needs it higher. It's like Planet10 say not good to cross where the impendance peak is, you best stay a bit above it. I would try in the 300 to 500Hz region with this driver, but certainly not lower than 300Hz.
 
I will be following this thread with interest. I've been looking at an old pair of Snell E with blown tweeters, now the Alpair 5.3 will slot in where the tweeter sits, so the plan is to seal off behind the 5.3 with a pipe/cup to 1.7litres then run the seas 8inch mid woofer to 300 -400hz, there is already a L pad on the speaker, so might use these on the woofer to dial them in due to their high 91spl. does this sound feasible?
 
ehm, the L-pad is meant for controlling tweeter level. You won't find any L-pad or resistor ( if not in particular situations when you would want to alter Qe etc.) in line with a woofer. A high power L-pad( 15-20W) might be used with the Alpair as well, I guess...but usually you set the levels right by design, as the L-pad gives the user's final touch, generally for makin' the speaker sound mor or less 'brilliant'.

Check, check: due to bafflestep loss a woofer lose some of its efficiency so the SPL data needs to be lowered... Then the Mark Audio Alpair 5.3 is 4 Ohm which is another matter ( + 3 dB compared to 8 Ohm at the same power) so do your math...😗
 
So, would you treat this project as a 2 way speaker? I was thinking more on the grounds of a WAW system . I was thinking cap to protect 5.3 from bass duties and a low pass filter for the mid bass unit. P s maths is not my strong point 😬

The snell type E I have is the iii so has a rear firing tweeter, so if this is removed I would have a 4in hole right behind the front tweeter, are you suggesting I maybe run a 4in pipe from front to back?
And as mentioned by picowallspeaker that the 2 drivers aren't that far out when it comes to matching in this configuration?
