The Alpage is a cheap copy of a Technics 1200 (1210) whilst the KLH is just complete junk - I wouldn't buy either.

Anyhow, I'm in no great hurry.
That's the best way to be. You could place a wanted ad on audio related sites and buy/sell places, you never know what will turn up.

Hi,
One of the worlds cult turntables, in comparison the KLH does not look
too bad. One has to be a suspended subchassis turntable fan and also
know what you are doing to restore it. If I saw it in a local shop for
£20 I'd probably buy it in the spot, assuming nothing is terminally
broken or damaged.
I'd have it up and running and tweaked with a cartridge for ~ £50,
to be honest I do not know what is "under the cover" but if it is
similar inside to the above AR XA then I'd consider it a bargain.
But that is a particular viewpoint .....
🙂/sreten.
MJL, and sreten et al....
The ARin thr picture is very nice. A good used one will be hard to beat. If the KLH is similar to the AR, then it would be a no-brainer. If it is a cosmetically modified AR with some adds, then just buy it (KLH had a long history of doing such). The bearing is excellent, the qualities are very well known. THE precursor to all suspended decks (superceding the Thorens and Lencos, etc.)
If the electric cuing is not working, most likely can be operated manually. Look here for a great site about AR turntables.
I agree with mr. Willing, no hurry = better oportunities. Now if serious about the CAD$300 options, then obviously lots more options, with some "audiophile approved" turntables in that range...

My first good AR-XA was $25 and was low hours and minty looking. I must say it didn't look particularly cool next to the Mitsubishi DP-EC7 turntable I had at the time, but five minutes of listening was enough to prompt me to deep six that Mitsubishi. The AR absolutely creamed the fancy Japanese table sonically - and this was with the same type and brand of cartridge. (I even swapped the styli to make sure - that is how big the difference was. Radio Shack's best cartridge by Shure.) A nicely set up stock AR-XA/XB is no slouch and the modification possibilities are almost endless.
Re: MJL, and sreten et al....
I'm considering the KLH but, once again, what's electric cueing? A brief description for a complete TT rookie.
How about a Dual 1214? Nice feature - it can play 78's (I have a few...). Here's the link:

A decent table?

basically a switch is touched and the arm moves up/down, and over/back. A nice feature if working, but not neccessary.
If really unsure of turntables, I'll dig one outta my stash and send it to you free. It won't be a "great" table, but will be fully functioning, less cartridge. Ad a Shure ME97 cart or similar (which would do you for at least one step up in performance)
I think I have something like a dozen or so tables....Duals, Yamahas, some DD, some belt, oh a couple of Sony's a s well.
But I'm not gonna send ya my Oracle or my Sugden re-plinth.
email me if you feel this would be ok

Re: what's electric cueing?
Ah, your a good man Nanook!. You know you have a brother in arms when he doesn't consider the above quote odd. I have been the same with speakers (itching to build more) and now it's amps...this is a sickness, this obsession, you know.
I have sent you an email.
Thanks for the explanation of cueing. That's what I thought it was, but wasn't sure. I'm a complete dunce where this stuff is concerned.

Picked up a mint XB for $40 on craigslist this week!
most canucks...
...live in an audio wasteland (I know I do).
seeing any AR table is pretty rare. MJL I emailed you, please give me a call or provide your # ( I have VOIP, so no "cost" to me)

Re: most canucks...
Thanks again Stew,
I have gone ahead and bought the KLH (thanks for finding that sreten) as a future restoration project. I'm having a hard time finding information on it.
If anyone out there has anything on it, I'd appreciate it

Hi,
Your not the only one. Some pictures of the inside may help establish
if it is AR based or not - and clarify the so- called electronic cueing.
🙂/sreten.

I'll take a few and post them when I get it.

Re: MJL...
Hi Stew,
Somehow I missed your post until now. A few days ago I sent your an email regarding the Sony. Let me know if you got it.
I have received the KLH. The seller had it wrapped up real nice, so I got it intact.
First thing: it seems to be in decent shape. The dust cover has some scratches and scuffs on it but no cracks and the hinges are not broken. It is that completely nasty shade of blue that attracted me to it - I love it!
The plinth is mahogany plywood and the deck is just flat 18 gauge steel. It came without a bottom, which may mean that someone was attempting to "fix" it. I don't see any stress on any of the screws from brutal hands wielding unpracticed screwdrivers though.
I have taken some pictures to post here. The first is of the platter which is aluminum and quite heavy (a guess - maybe 2 lbs?).

Here's one of the under-carriage. Everything looks original.
As I'm none to familiar with turntables, I was really surprised that the little silver thing in the top-right of the photo is the motor. I thought it was a capacitor at first. This is puny! Surely such a heavy platter needs a big V-8 engine type motor to drive it?😉

Sony was sent yesterday. I'll have to find the reciept...
I gotta look closer at your pix though
and the puny motor: two (or 3) approaches exit, big motor, big platter, that's tough to control the speed with.
light platter, big motor, easy to maintain inertia. and but requires good speed control control
light platter, smaller motor(s). . easiest to control.

Hi,
The "froth" could be from varnishing the PCB. In this case
you would be able to see the varnish on the resistor legs.
It does seem to be an AR clone of sorts - and good quality.
There is lot you can do to it - nearly all of which does not cost much.
First thing I guess is to work out the "electrics".
🙂/sreten.
