Hi,
Could be ok, could be terrible - poor torque / speed stability / dynamic
wow. Why an unknown model ? For DD I'd pick a decent known model.
🙂/sreten.

Do you have any more pics? Not a good sign when you can't even find info on Japanese sites.😕

Hi,
I'm looking at what's (relatively) cheap and available. I know very little about turntables, as I haven't handled one in about 24 years (went to cassettes to CD's in the meantime).
I'm willing to work on the unit to improve it if it has any potential.

Yeah, I haven't found much. Here's another pic - full view.

Hi,
There is a whole series of pictures in the e-bay auction.
There is nothing much you can do to a DD with a poor motor or servo design.

Hi sreten,
To clear up: I was referring to information, not photos. I'm not trying to hide this amazing E-bay auction - Google would find it quick enough.
So, your advise would be to avoid this TT, given that I can't find enough positive info?
Thanks.

Hi, indeed, better the devil you know, 🙂/sreten.
Re: could also look...
Thanks. The problem is I don't know any devils. I have next to no knowledge on this subject, so I look for guidance here.
Thanks Nanook, this looks to be a decent unit. Any ideas as to what it might be worth?
I'm not looking to make a huge investment here, as it will see very limited use.

I'd email him/her about the table. may be worth more than you want to spend.,
But considering the $1 ad, I'd try it🙂 (been on that site since Aug10...). I have no personal knowledge of this model.
with a little patience a decent DD table that would be reliable as hell should come up.(Sony, Yamaha, Technics/Pioneer, Kenwood...) The ALPAGE is an Alpine /Luxman product (or one just prior to their merger)

I have e-mailed about the Denon. Thanks again. 🙂
Yes, this was about the only piece of information I could find about the Alpage. That's why I though it was worth looking at, but even the best manufactures make duds once in a while.
Surely would like to know if it's worth it.

Hi,
The Denon DP-47F fully working is not usually cheap.
check out the Yamaha P-850 on e-pray

The Yamaha is from a US seller - no shipping to Canada (some think Canada is the far side of the moon...).
I was really trying to limit my search to Canada, local if possible. I have found a couple other possibilities:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220168911470&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260178181314&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270184179343&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=017
Any of these worth the trouble?
Anyway, the SL-2000 has to be improved, if only for the learning experience.
........
The problem with it's current control unit: speed sagging under load, bad
regulation and too low torque (even the needle slows the platter...).
Hi,
The above illustrates the problem with some DD's, especially cheap ones.
I have had a look at canadian e-pray and nothing looks inspiring.
except for :
http://cgi.ebay.ca/KLH-Research-Mod...oryZ3283QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Which would make a very nice restoration project - bargain.

Thanks for digging that out.
What's "electric cueing"? Difficult to remedy?
This needs repairs and a cartridge. Plus the fact that local pickup is out, as Ajax is roughly 200Km from here.
So it's $45 for the unit plus shipping (maybe $30? - could be more) and a decent cartridge + stylus. I could be breaching the $300 mark when all's said and done.
If this turntable is worth it, I won't hesitate. In you opinion is it?
I'm sorry if this offends any of you guys but this deck looks like a piece of total junk. IMHO you would be better off with an old Thorens os something similiar - get a really battered one and put it in a new plinth of your own making.
That Technics is the 'cult' deck of the second and by far the best bet of the three links posted. I wouldn't buy the Garrard and definately not the Toshiba. Some early Garrards are good but that isn't one of them. The Toshiba doesn't have any merit other than it not being a CD player.

Hi,
Are you referring to the Alpage or the KLH? If not the Alpage, what are your thoughts on it? Too many unknowns?
The Technics has >5 days to run plus I may go hunting for a specimen on the weekend in the actual physical world...

Going out to some local used shops is a really good idea. Look for a nice used Denon or Technics SL12xx that is in good condition and doesn't look beaten (some people actually look after their stuff).
If possible have someone hook a table up for a listen. This shouldn't be a problem if you are willing to spend two or three hundred bucks, and you will have a functioning table that doesn't require repair to work properly.

Hi,
The clock has run out on the Alpage...but I'm sure they will re-list it.
The problem with a lot of the local used shops is that they save their really good stuff to sell on E-Bay. I have had limited success in the past with such things.
Anyhow, I'm in no great hurry.
