She was really suspicious when I carried them in to the house.. -"these are not gona stay for very long... Right?" she said..

But now when we have friends over she want's them to listen to some music... Kinda nice.. 🙂

By the way, some 12 years ago I built my first OB...I had built a small chipamp (tda 800) and then I needed a speaker for that one...I knew a guy at a local TV repair shop, he used to give me some salvaged parts for free...I asked him if he had some old speaker...then he pulled That one from the dusty bin...

I was amazed how good it sounded...an oval speaker from an old TV set..with really small red magnet...

I'll look later to see if I can locate it (it should be buried somewhere in the garage) and make a pic...

Today it's time to try the boucherot.. Bipolar cap 15uf+ 2.2MKP.. Resistor 8.2ohm..

It did it's job.. 🙂 It cleaned of the peak 800-2k..

I did just trow it in so not much time to listen yet.. But first impression says it may have taken som of the low frequency with it.. But Iam not sure :/

Now of to wire Alpha-6 out of phase 🙂

boucherot values ;
leave resistor as is , if you lack some bass - decrease value of cap;

you mast find compromise adequate for your ears (room,amp,whatever)

tweak it back and forth and decide ,but do not think about something more complicated , you'll loose magic

Okej.. 🙂 I'll try some more "settings" and report back 🙂


I also tried to wire the Alpha out of phase.. But to my ears it was not so good.. Sound was a bit too laid back.. Also some small info was lost too.. There is still nothing behind the Alpha (felt)..

All this is from my unexperienced ears..

good- now you know proper phasing of main driver 😉

this days (argh........ house refurbishing!!) I'll think about BudP Woodoo and maybe even choke him for help........ it's time for Alpha tweakkkks;

maybe you can look at Planet10's site (ok-one of) ; I think that you can find there photo-strip of butchering dust cap....... if not, I'll make one for you.......

edit:

you can try blanket (few layers ) as test for felt behind Alpha ;

say to wife that this (blankets) are on spks just temporary :devilr:

Speakers themseves are not bad, they have this "tone" that makes one to like them, even though they roll off quite early...
On the other hand, the open-back enclosure is really ugly (not Choky's ugly)🙂 , but I left it as is...

I've no idea. There are just some numbers on the back, and 8 ohm....no Iskra logo...

Anyway, this is a bit OT...

The whole point being that

1. Yes, Open Baffle performance is so good that you won't mind if it looks ugly...
2. Old speakers, like that one, used to sound better than than most today's counterparts...

Very true 🙂 my wife almost agree ...



Anyway I played around today with different speaker placements..
I have found that it made the soundstage a bit more focused... duh..

I also played around with the Boucherot and settled with just the 15uf and 8.2r.. The lost bass is back with no peak, I atleast can't hear it.. Which is what matters to me 🙂

I also tried some towels behind the Alpha driver and it made the soundstage less deep, but also more varm.. It was also a big difference how many I used.. So I will test some more later and report back...

just leave it as you like ; back damping or not- that really depends on your room ,too (back surface) ......

Hi Younick! Did you have experience with koss porta pro or something we could relate to?

Would you try pink floyd for me? Then some jazz, metal and electronic music like kraftwerk! (oh yeah! 🙂)

Do you notice any unwanted sounds or lack of something?

I have Sennheiser HD-25 headphones...
But is compairing headphones to speakers the way to do it?

Speakers I have at my hands are: DIY2000 , Cyburgs needle and Mumma Mosen ....

I can try later today and report back here.. 🙂

You guys are truly an inspiration

I am sure the sound is good and honest, but to get the most of it you will need some notches, and without I am sure you experience some listening fatiquie

I know the argument that it will ruin dynamic, but it really is the opposite, and if tuned properly it will result in more smooth an airy sound, I think its called ambience

It can take a very long time to detect and correct such minor but important details
