Aleph J illustrated build guide

Still getting used to the new forum platform, but there should be a button in the lower left to "attach files". See below. I am not sure if the ability to attach files is restricted for new users, but your profile is showing 2012...

Andy,

Meticulous build, lovely organization, and most of all…neat! Yes, the hallmark of your build is the dual mono power supply!

Best,
Anand.
Thank you, Anand!

It is a good feeling for me that you ooint out neatness. As a first time P2P builder, many many small choices have been made iot achieve this. Not without help of course, and A LOT of inspiration. But a lot of thinking. Very happy it had come to life now 🙂

Hey All -

I've decided to tackle an Aleph J build using the DIY Aleph J Build Guide on the Blogspot website. This will be my first amp build so please bear with me. 🙏🏽

I have ordered all the parts from the saved Mouser cart that were available at Mouser/Digi-Key. Was hoping to enlist your help in figuring out suitable alternatives to the parts that were out of stock.

Please see the spreadsheet of the cart attached. I crossed out all the items I was able to order. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like everything left is for the PSU except for the C2/C3 caps on the two Aleph J boards and the thirty 0.47ohm 3w 5% resistors that will be used on both the Aleph J boards and the PSU.

Thank you all so much in advance.

I get mechanical parts (Similar to the 2 below) in bulk at my local hardware store or off a popular online site. Typically much less expensive.

Enjoy the build.

Edited to add - I am not sure if it works/is an acceptable practice on the new platform, but you can try changing the file extension to your attachments for upload. Just put a note in your post.

O
Ok. I have a Mouser cart saved with the substitutions you recommended above. Wanted to check with you about a couple of things before making the purchase.

1) Is there any concern with using parts that are listed as "end of life?" The Panasonic resistors are designated as such: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/667-ERX-3SJR47V

2) Im a little confused by the fixed terminal block you recommend (https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/TE-Connectivity/282868-3?qs=ffBv/cLXMNB0Ynzu6QWJKA==).

It appears different in layout from the one on the BOM (https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Molex/39890-0303?qs=404muyNbhLH4uctN8rh6Ug==).

Will this still fit onto the power supply board despite the difference?

Would the below option be suitable as well?

Grateful for the help and Happy New Year!

Finished! It sounds amazing, and fired up without a hitch. Fun build and I felt like for the most part I was able to use everything I've learned to do it really well. Very quiet, just fantastic! using with my FHXLs 10ps.

I found a hafler 220 case that I stretched to make it taller and longer. That extra fab took a lot longer than I thought, I also bought the undrilled heatsinks and tapping all the holes added to the build time. So cheaper, but uglier than I expected. But the sound is what I care about for now.

Congrats! Looks very nice. I like that you improvised and used what you have. Haven’t gotten to drilltap yet. But no rush in challenging my pleasant GH status anyhow.

Nice job. Enjoy 😊

In the case of the 0.47R at least there are others available. Still it's sad to see the Panasonics being discontinued and it does make one wonder if the alternatives will eventually go the same way... 🙁

But maybe it’s a sign: ballast is the past, now to fly on sans it  who is afraid of a little heat?

Hockey pucks here we come.

Jokes aside: best order and stock up while still available.

Cheers, Dennis
