Aleph 4 PCB Bulk Purchase

Brian: Since you did such a good job of organizing this board to be made for all of us who are interested (20 so far?), can I count on you to come up with a complete list of part numbers and vendors to acquire all the components for this project? Thanks in advance.

Mark,
Speaking of cool heatsinks, I do remember Brian mentioning that in one of his post. I need to ask him where he got that!
All kidding aside, I always seems to have problem in getting parts but I do WANT and ENJOY building the amps myself.

fcel:

I actually already made a webpage with pictures of the board layout, and the components that I referenced for measurements. I made a nice table of the vendors and part numbers of the parts that I ordered. I will post a link to it, once I update it with the final board details. I got the large surplus heatsinks from Austin Electronics, a place near Atlanta, GA. You are probably best off getting the ones the Wayne Sankey used for his Aleph 2 amplifiers, his were new, and better size. My amplifier will be about 6 inches deeper then his and quite a bit heavier.

Variac:

heh... sounds like a good plan... while I am at it, why not make complete Aleph clone amplifiers and sell them on ebay. I am sure that Nelson would approve.

Nevertheless, I will post the webpage tonight with ordering details for the PCBs. The initial ordering will probably be for 40 pcbs, as there is always the option to purchase more later.

Brian:
Because of the circuit diagram and my questions posted in the other Aleph 5 thread, I somehow just to take another look at the Aleph 2 layout that you last posted.
Please don't yell at me if I'm creating problems at this last minute.
My concern:
1. Should the -ve of C9 and C10 be tied together? (I read that C9 is next to C10 horizontally, correct?)
2. Should the trace between the -ve of C9 and the top side of the 6 resistors be deleted? I'm looking at the circuit diagram of the other Aleph 5 thread where the four resistors are not tied to the capacitors and I assume same for Aleph 2.

Brian.
1. I'm not sure what you meant by C9 tie to the other side ...... Nelson Pass has make a comment about C7 and what was shown for C7 is fine. You have a question on C7 and you have called/emailed Nelson Pass previously from your earlier post.
2. Could you take another look at what I described previously? The -ve of C9 & C10 should be tied together and -ve of C9 is not tied to the Drain (or small "s") of IRF244.

If you look at the Aleph 4 schematic, or other ones, you will see that C9 is indeed tied the same as my layout. I asked Nelson about the difference in this tied the way of the Aleph 2, or Aleph 4, and he stated that it makes no difference. I noticed that Gray tied it the way that the Aleph 4 is for his Aleph 2.6 board design, indicating that he preferred it, thus I have decided to tie it this way.

This board design should work for any of the Aleph amplifiers, which the use of the proper resistor values, and supply voltages.

Brian: I thought I have seen your layout as posted yesterday and I have also given you my comments. I just took another look at your previous layout and it's different from what you post today. Did you change the layout at C9 & C10 because of additional feedback from other members on this board? I'm all for whatever works or sounds better.

Brian:

Comparing between Aleph 2 & 5, I've noticed that for Aleph 5:
1. C9 is shown as what you have layout &
2. C7 (different ..... 47nf) is shown connected between C & E of MPSA18.

I'm just curious as to:
1. Why C9 is shown connected to C10 (-ve sides) for Aleph 2 on the Pass Labs website &
2. How's the production unit connected.

I asked Nelson about C7, and he said it didn't matter, as long as you use the correct value in the configuration. It is just a npn compensation cap.

As for the production model... I would assume that they are made in the way that I made my boards, since the other aleph layouts have a later date on them.

If you look at the patent on the us gov site, it is in the way that I have my board layout.

Board Status

I drove down to the board place and gave them the deposit ($400) and went over the gerber files with the engineer to make sure everything will come out alright. The gerber file came out great, and should work with no problems. He said they will be ready in 2 weeks, maybe sooner, and he will call me when they are done.

I went ahead and ordered 80 boards, since I have a request of 25 sets so far (50 boards) and I figured that 60 boards might not be enough to satisify everyone on the forum.

If you want boards and have not e-mailed me yet, please do so soon, so that I can get money together when I go pick up the order. I don't want to have to take another $1000 out of my savings account in 2 weeks.

On a side note, of my matched sets so far (93/124 done so far), my best matched set of six vary by 0.00297v (for Vgs):
3.87754
3.87767
3.87871
3.87890
3.87990
3.88051

I should finish them up tommorrow night for those who I told that I would sell matched sets to.

edit: by the way, all 124 mosfets that I got were from the same lot, from the same date, 32 week of 2001.
