Speaking of missing people, what happened to Walt Jung and John Curl? I think Walt got tired quite early from certain events in the superregulator thread, but was that the only reason and did he make a decision to never post again? I haven't seen John post anything for a long long time, so I suppose he also got tired and left.
I suspect in most cases where luminaries like Fred, John Curl, Graham Maynard and Walt Jung have left it is because they have tired of the constant challenges to their ideas.
Critics of their attitude would argue that people with ideas should always be challenged, and that they have an obligation to explain themselves in detail.
OTOH, creativity is a strange thing, as it evokes great personal pride, and feels no obligation to explain or justify.
While it is generally true that most people do not like criticism, I think it's also true that these guys actually have nothing to prove, as they have achieved some seminal goals in their lives. When some unknown poster comes up with 'stand and deliver', they are a bit surprised, and after a few such interchanges they tire of the aggression and leave.

Yes to the first and no to the second. Ideas, claims etc. should be analyzed and critisized, that is a normal and necessary part of progress. However, since this forum is not the academic world, nobody is obliged to give an answer. If somebody makes a claim and clearly states that he/she is not interested in defending it, then that should be respected, but then that person must also accept that many will not believe it and that there might be discussion between other forum members about it. I do remember one occasion where John Curl made a claim and added "guys, you just have to believe me on this", and as far as I remeber this was respected and nobody harassed him requiring him to come up with a proof. (Maybe he came up with a reference himself somewhat later. I don't quite remember.)
I have always been surprised how many talented audio professionals there are who actually do have patience with the forum and seem to think it's worth the time they spend here, for one reason or another. That probably says something about the forum, and these people are mostly very valuable contributors.

If we see talented people "leaving" this forum, take it as "not strange", then the strange one is those talented who stays 😀
There are many-many-many-many-many......of them here. They gives answers to questions, technical ones, I often see they give answer with catagory of "secret" ones. The ones that takes years to findout himself. The ones that is not in textbooks. Clues to makes good sounding gear.
One obvious one is the man called Nelson Pass. He deserves his name "The One and Only", because he is 😀
From reading the writings/papers of him that can be found in this website alone, one should be able to make good sounding amp.
He gives his project for DIY, even some of his commercial products schematics (discontinued ones offcourse, but that doesn't mean it is not good anymore). He answers technical questions, even the most updated ones, and not fearing of anything. Maybe some hi-jack his design for some commerical usage, but that doesn't stop him of contributing.
(Myself think that one should not be afraid of hi-jacking of a design. A "copy" one will never ever as good as the original one, because I believe there is somekind of "spirit" that goes along with the original product, that makes it always sounds better).
Maybe he has a "teacher" spirit inherent in himself. One good teacher will never ever afraid giving what he knows to his students. That teacher will answer to his limits. Maybe he teaches 100's or 1000's of students, one or two will become professors, more respectable/high status than himself, but incase of that, the teacher is not feeling that he has grown a tiger that will eat him in the future, instead he is proud if one of his students can become "someone". One thing that the teacher will get, he will get respect from that "someone" (former student of his), the teacher's name will live forever. If we calculate what Nelson Pass gives to this forum, and what he gets, maybe what he gets is not 1/100 of what he gives. But his many will be remembered and will be respected.

If you want the "luminaries" to stick around you've got to massage their egos, not continualy challenge them. Maybe this is why Mr Pass is still around?
It can be said different; he is still around because he has no interest to plunge into challenges ;-) He knows what he knows, says it once and explains it perhaps once more, and then demerits continuing if he gets not understood. Others feel the need to extract a confession from their dissenters that they were wrong, but he doesn’t and so prevents his health, as I have seen a couple of times. There may be some more reasons, but I would prefer Carlos to analyze these matters, he is better than me ;-))

FM inter-station noise....go observing waveforms, crossover distortions and all possible data....and so convinced they are, that when they go to listen they "listen this way too!"
We can fool ourselves....not only objectivists, but subjectivists too..if you believe in something, it is probable that you will conclude this way.
Example:
Girl friend....you may think she is kind, her family knows that she is not, that she can be rude.....
You may think she love's you deeply...she told that, and you want to believe...but maybe, she loves much more that guy that did not wanted her
You decide that she is beautifull.....others do not think so.....

Never try to construct an amplifier from someone you do not like.....you will have all small micron details to criticise....it is not the amplifier...it is your relatioship with the constructor that is not good....seems crazy isnt'it?....but it is not!
The Subjectivists....my case..... seems a bit more attached to nature...trying to feel good with the amplifier, and this happens when the amplifier have some distortions...because life is full of distortions.... refractions, and many things that you do not see but exists...alike infraread ligth and other things....we....subjectivists do not bother with numbers...we think they are pretty to decorate catalogues, but do not guarantee the listening quality.
The equipment can have some distortion, as life already has...sounds in nature are beating one each other, producing harmonics, cancelling, increasing...having echoes, absortion and that characteristic ...maybe some harshing sound, that can make you feel the "instrument realism"....a harshing sound!.
Some distortions are nice, and you see that many guys loves Tubes, and measuring they are awfull...but sounds very nice...so....subjectivists do not bother with measurements, as they do not guarantee nothing..... the maximum they can tell you is that you are paying adequate amount of money of a 100 watts unit....market price maybe...adequated or not..... that the distortion of 0.01 is something that guarantee that many others distortions you will listen will be something that you can blame the speaker....well..... interesting data.
Imagine objective meaurements:
"Blonde, 180 centimeters tall, PHD in Sciences and Arts already made, pretty eyes, long hairs...elegant walk....can dance with you, can talk many languages....What a girl!"
You go and try to have her as your wife..... well...you can have problems with those specifications...many troubles, in many sittuations...thiis is not the same as a "test drive"...or to be with her for monthes...reason why we do not do this way....we go to stay with our womans for years and them we decide to be hunger...oh sorry!..to marriage.

creations based on my words...i think the way i use to write can be nice and impressive to many of you, but i am not wonderfull...i have many defects, and also i am living hard problems those days...There are guys that came into me, by direct mail to have more fun, and they discovered that i feel myself sad and depressed many days in this life...i am happy, and sad too....normal and crazy also...with the bless of Gods (everyone is OK to me)
But when i am suffering as a "sick dog", those poor animals that felt themselves abandoned under the rain, in a cold weather, i force myself to be better, as i think problems may be some step to climb, something unavoidable to produce a better person....When we are humble to perceive that we create all our own troubles, beeing entirelly responsable of our destiny.... things turns better....problem is when the guy is too much self defended,too much pride of himself... that cannot look to himself with real eyes....you know those heroes that made ship all life long, and use to tell stories how they were heroic smashing and humiliating other persons...i listen many examples of those guys...they will never learn nothing.
I use to help people, also i use to be positive, and sometimes i exagerate things....positive because when i like the amplifier i do not let to tell this to all forum...and this is positive, as designer felt happy, in special when people construct their designs..this is positive, to make others happy......when i dislike i may talk once and silence.....i prefer to open my mouth to say good things, as others already done the less interesting job.
