AK4490 USB Dac with dsd support.

I wouldn't be worried about the SMPS Sonny has selected, he would not have chosen it if it would impact the sound. Some companies like Simaudio in Québec are adopting SMPS in an hybrid format where they use the switch mode to stay invariable to whatever your AC input voltage is and then for the output add a second stage to it in a linear PSU, which they call hybrid PSU. They combine best of both world this way. They use this in their flagship products so it has to be good.

Anyways, you can always test it yourself, this is why we're all here, DIY! Yesss!

Ciao!

I've tried SMPS. And with a good one there's nothing wrong soundwise.
I'm waiting for the new dacboard with spdif and then I'll decide to go linear or not. But it's always nice to here from people who tried so my decision is easier to make 🙂 (Finance is an issue here 🙂

Might work. But Sonny might know the exact resistor value to change in order to cut the output down to around 2v. But this may require a hot air rework station to do a nice job swapping it.

thanks guys for the suggestions, yes, I am using the SE o/p.

I will wait for Sonny to provide guidance. Soldering a few SMDs will not be an issue for me, just have to source for it :-(

4.6V.. that is pretty high output..did not realize that it has such high o/p from the discrete shield.

Tynan, you can think of just putting a normal Resistor on your amps I out instead.

Can use trimmer in between dac and amp first. To determine which Resistance is comfortable for you. And than chose the closest value Resistor and install. The non audiophile approach)) would be to get a small box with rca in and out and get this Resistor there. This would allow you to get the desired volume levels without touching dac and your amp

The easiest thing is to use the balanced out but only gnd and out+ and feed it to the rca connector... Then you have the half signal level (-6dB)

Some picture just before release of chassis.

Powerswitch is located in the bottom close to the front just as in the Linn products.

The chassis is prepared for the DAC with the extra spdif inputs as well in the DAC V1.1

Two of the XLR should have been male. But it is the same cutout as the female connectors.

For those choosing the Preamp only the is spare RCA connectors for the channel occupied by the DAC.

I am working hard on getting the New dac mainboard done.

But you have give me some line, because the chassis and other work takes more time than anticipated....

But the plan is to get it shipped with an week.. I know i said monday, but time is just flying away ..

The DAC board will have 1 SPDIF RCA, 1 Optical RCA, 1 I2S interface.

It will run through an SRC4392 from TI. The SRC does not accept DoP.

So to get DoP or native DSD you will have to use the USB interface for it.

The DAC board with the extra inputs and SRC will be approx. 100€ more expensive...

Chassis for preamp and DAC ready for production-

Hello Fellows.

I have attached the final drawing of the chassis.

I am asking for prices today, so to be able to get the best price possible i need to know how many is interested in the chassis.

It can be purchased

1) as it is.
2) with frontpanel only and also/or with linear powersupply as well for your own designs
3) With Frontpanel, Linear powersupply, preamp
4) With Frontpanel, Linear powersupply, preamp and DAC.

Let me know how many is interrested and choose of color on frontpanel. The rest of the chassis can also be delivered with black finish or Raw.

Does it sound better with the LPS, than the SMPS?
