AK4490 USB Dac with dsd support.

Sonny, first of all, congratulations for your great product! I have been trying my DAC on the last few days and I've liked a lot what I have heard! I need to complete some parts on my system to do final tests, which I will report here. I have the discrete shield and the SMPS, plus the pre.

I am choosing a NAA (for convenience alone I don't want to have a PC/laptop connected to the DAC in my living room). I want to have something that I can control form my iphone/ipad and which supports native DSD256 with this DAC. Right now that means no window's based NAA.

Will there be a license for the Thesycon driver in the future? I have no idea how expensive this is for you. This will determine if I consider a Windows option.

On linux, I hear very good comments about the HQ-Player and its option to convert to dsd256 on the fly. How does HQplayer compare to Volumio? My tests now have been playing PCM directly form my laptop.

I have an i7 for the server, so I could run HQplayer too and convert on the fly. HQplayer seems the best choice, although there were some clicks at song start reported (DSD256 conversion). I need to check the HQPlayer Embedded for de NAA and control apps for iOS (definitely not roon for me ($$)).

I got asked about the same questions on email.

So here it is.

1) preamp kit (389€)
2) AK 4490 USB DAC + discrete DAC kit (326€)
3) SMPS (73€) or LPS (155€)
4) Input / output connectors (45€ for XLR board and 45€ RCA board)
5) chassis (191€).

So an complete kit will cost for SMPS variant 1069€ + shipping and for LPS variant 1151€ + shipping

The powersupply board LPS should be ready for production next week.

Regardless if you choose SMPS or LPS everything can be powered form the SMPS and LPS.

7) I can also sell prebuild preamp/DAC/LPS for 1351€ + shipping with 2 years warranty

8) There is space for an RIAA board as well when it is ready.
Excellent. Thank you, Sonny 🙂

I was wondering if there's a possibility to use the Pi 2 as NAA since DSD doesn't require much processing when fed from HQ Player to the NAA. It will be already all processed. If there's a Pi 2 image available it would be great. I have a very powerful computer for HQ Player.

Do - Post 767 has an image for raspberry pi2. (second link)

I have the 6600 non k up and running. I've created a ram disk of 2gb and installed HQplayer on there (not sure it makes a difference...but if you are running 12gb+ memory and not utilising it there is no harm and apparent subjective improvements)

It ramps up to 100% all 4 core utilised at the start and take about 15 seconds to start playing but once music is playing sits around 30% utilisation. I extend the playlist and it works gapless.

My work pc is a fair bit faster, but I would suggest an x99 platform is over the top for this purpose - maybe an i7 6700 would be the perfect fit.

If you don't run a non 2-s filter or push for dsd 256 its instant starts.

Great! I'll have 12 cores to play with so it should be fun! 😀

That AK4490 DAC is just phenomenal!!!!

Note on the Preamp kit:

ribbon cable for the encoder is made wrongly according to the master ribbon cable.

The key tap at the encoder end of the flat cable need to be removed with a knife an the ribbon cable should be rotated 180 degrees

The cable should be mounted as shown on the picture below:

Sonny, is this still something I need to consider when I receive my pre-amp? Or has it been corrected?

I need to save up, to get my hands on the driver as i need to obtain VID and PID from the USB organisation.

Sonnya, when will the RIAA be ready? What design will it be based on? Do you have a price estimate? Will there be a PSU for it?

I am working on it this week. But i have a couple of layout i have to finish before i start look at the RIAA.

Sonnya, thanks for the reply. I think linux would be a very good solution for the NAA, so IMHO there is probably no "need" for the driver if it is expensive or complicated.

I could be interested in the phono pre, please report on your progress!
