AI, for or against

The thing about AI is that like everything technological, it will disseminate itself.

Look at computers. In the 70s they were limited to large companies and even states (Clemson had an IBM 3033 with which the leased time to the state of SC DCS). Then in the 80s, the PC became available as a desktop computer. Now we have more power in our cell phones than the IBM-3033 of the 70s.

AI will be the same. Eventually it will be everywhere.

It is not a matter of liking it or not. We simply have to accept it.

Regulation and prohibition? We're in the "wild west" stage now.

The use of smartfones at public places like schools and work prohibited.
Indeed.
Some people actually do work, especially manufacturing.

People want "high quality" which requires real skills.

Likely more than 40 young kids got removed where I am at.
For being on cell phones constantly.
They cry like babies demanding high wage.
They seem to be surprised you dont get paid to be on Facebook all day at work.

Seems like getting 3 likes from 200 fake friends is more important.

For people that do work, we have to follow redundant safety regulations.
Because morons on their cell phones all the time, just so happen to get injured often.
Not paying attention, or just plain stupid to start with.

The paper pushers are not more special, they think they are.
They waste company money logged into their Amazon account and fiddle farting with AI.
Bye Bye, we actually work here.

the difficult to detect families of wealth and influence dream of living in a world with servants, robots and ai. Ai is attractive in their minds because control costs are so cheap.

Once on "nachdenkseiten" was an article "who reigns the world?" Even more interesting than the article were comments of readers already engaged in this question since longer time.

While awaiting the inevitable doom and gloom, mass unemployment and the inability of governments to save the financial system, why not have some fun and get the best out of AI for our hobby?

I have created a NotebookLM with all my electronics books and use AI to find stuff in the collection. It is remarkably useful. Of course other sources can also be linked, diyaudio.com, even youtube videos, but importantly we have full control upon the sources used to answer any question.

Perhaps it is worth having a thread dedicated to the use of AI in our hobby, like code generation for embedded systems, FPGAs, simulations, finite element analysis, the creation of 3d models for printing or CNC.

Obviously AI could be a productivity enhancer. Can’t wait to have AI generate libraries for ecad pcb design.
I say to AI, create a footprint for a specific Omron relay in KiCad from the datasheet. If and when do you think this will ever happen?
But maybe never as it seems that a virtual girl friend is more important for society 🙂 Having a virtual friend is actually very sad imo.

I have very STRONG FEELINGS about smartphones & social media > as to where this is leading humanity >

There are somethings I'd like to say about 9/11 , but I don't think I'm allowed to 😕
However, I am allowed to state that there is a MASSIVE difference between M.I.H.O.P. and L.I.H.O.P.
:cop:
Leave the political, religious, subjective stuff and the conspiracy theories out and all will be fine.

I say to AI, create a footprint for a specific Omron relay in KiCad from the datasheet. If and when do you think this will ever happen?

It has clearly already happened, just not directly accessible to the public. Don't you use footprints/step models from Mouser? SamacSys which powers it and SnapEDA do exactly that - automatically generate all kinds of footrpirint and 3D models out of datasheets.

We should expect the same to happen to simulation models, perhaps with user input fine tuning the model. You upload the graphic characteristics of obscure old tubes and obtain a working model. This should happen very soon. It's clear how to do it by hand, just needs automation.

What would be really great and where AI could shine is simulating mixed environments - a combination of analogue, digital, programmable logic and a micro. All parts of a micro controlled FPGA dac, together with the code in the same simulator.

AI is a Trojan horse. Like FB/Meta and other social media, it starts with useful stuff in order to get people to trust it. Sure, ask for a recipe, ask it to solve a simple problem, ask it to write a paper for you. Once trust is established, it will be abused, just like FB/Meta and other social media.

LLM training is controlled. When the people controlling the training have a political agenda- and they do- it will enter into the training and the results. Here's one transparent example. This was poorly executed, but it shows the sort of thing that will happen with increasing frequency when people trust AI the way they trust "news" on FB/Meta.

It can be very tempting to use AI for your hobbies, schoolwork, etc. Resistance is the best approach, but probably futile, as AI will be embedded deeply in other things (controlling your news/advertising feeds, etc.) without peoples awareness.
