Advice for purchasing a 10-12in woofer

Why do some woofers sim well and others don't? Is there a general rule to look after when choosing a woofer for horns? Like maximum excursion, type of suspension...
There's not much to choose from when it comes to inexpensive 12 inch woofers, even the one from thomann is about the same price as the beymas when you include shipping.
 
Djim, never fully awake compared to the brains here... Can you please also post HR inputs for the THAM12?

Brian, think there is room for improvement in the THAM12 like in the other thread? Changes to S2 in HR wizard make larger variations than I've seen in other designs... (Edit) Or maybe the MTH30 can be updated? Your design right?

Bogdan, being a cheapskate myself, having simmed at least hundreds of drivers, good horn loaded drivers are rarer. Do not discount car subs if your PA work is non pro. IIRC for horns, you want low Q, high BL, and large xmax.

Djim, thanks. I had very different HR data, but I am using yours from now on... How does it sound? Is this a passable compact sub?

Comparison is of the 12LF 30L sealed (grey) and THAM12 (black). Increasing sealed cab did not help much...

Infinity 1260w and JBL GTO1214 auto subs sim half decent if you got access to them.

I know that horns help speakers with low xmax, but I'm afraid 4mm is too low.

Different loudspeaker manufacturers means different ways of calculating Xmax.

The conventional way was Hvc-Hg/2
In PA standard is (Hvc-Hg)/2 + 1/4Hg (used by RCF, B&C, 18Sound, PD, BMS, ect)
Beyma uses an unusual method of (Hvc-Hg)/2 + 1/3Hg but with some Beyma drivers the Xmax values are different from their published method.

P.Audio uses the conventional way so you need to recalculate their Xmax values.

P.Audio IMF-12LF
Xmax coneventional = 4 mm
Xmax (Hvc-Hg)/2 + 1/4Hg = 6.5 mm
Xmax beyma method = 7.3 mm

Beyma 12BR70
Xmax conventional = 6 mm
Xmax (Hvc-Hg)/2 + 1/4Hg = 7.75 mm
Xmax beyma method = 8.3 mm

It's not too good to be true, 1260w is well documented to be "good". That said, FR is a little "saddle shaped" and it's not for pro (long term high SPL) use but for bedroom and the occasional party you should fine. Try simming one in sealed, it does pretty good there too.

That is a pretty awful response curve...

Makes me question some people's definition of "fine".. 🙂

Neither are my design, but I have spreadsheets for both layouts that allow you to change panel size and layout and they would give you the corresponding HornResp parameters. I suspect both designs can be improved for a particular driver via use of the spreadsheet.
