Adcom GFA-5800 Cap replacement

Joesch1999,

If I may ask, when did you do the cap replacement? The reason I ask is I was wondering if you had a spreadsheet or a page of notes with the part numbers for the corresponding cap that you ended up replacing.

Thank you very much, James
I got all the parts from a guy on eBay, he will also give you the instructions for replacing them, many are higher quality than the originals , he gives you all the caps even new film caps, very responsive if you have questions, I found the biggest problem with my 5800 was the power board caps. The big screw caps were still perfectly fine. 300 bucks for all the caps was very reasonable, especially being as you get 4 of the big screw caps. They are normally like 150 for 2. From what I’ve found.

Yes I’ll post a link, this guy has all the caps, upgraded plus he gives you instructions, you probably won’t be able to find a better price, 295 bucks for all the caps, he includes the j/fets, but he recommends only to change them if there is a problem with them. I do have the adcom service manual which is all you really need to install the caps. Some of the new ones he provides have a bit higher uf which is good.

If the big screw caps are fine then you are paying for nothing?
Because I wanted them. Great deal if I need them or I can resell them as well.
More like the old man in the cave.

:geezer:
Mr Pass, just wanted to thank you for the time you put in the diy audio community, The F5 turbo I built has been a joy to listen to. I didn’t think I could ever afford a class A amp of this quality.
Thank you Mr Pass

Why do you feel P2 needs a oscilloscope?

If it is for the bias offset, if so, you would need a signal generator for the 1KHZ input signal.

Do you have the service manual? If not, it may have been placed in this thread or another Adcom thread I may have started.
i just purchased a signal generator thank you

Mr. Pass,

I just excitedly purchased an Adcom gfa-5800. I plan to have a local tech check it over and perhaps change out some of the smaller caps. I hope to not go crazy with a full rebuild with different transistors and all.

I’d like to ask you what you specifically would recommend as upgrades while it’s opened up. No doubt as to the quality of your design, however it is possible I am sure you may have had restraints in place by Adcom, or perhaps they used cheaper parts than you would choose if you were building it.

So are there specific parts in this amp that you would specifically change in addition to the standard recap, like higher quality resistors in certain places, different bias, etc.

Also do you have a preferred audio grade cap, any places film caps should be employed, upgraded, etc?

I’d rather put in it what you recommend than some random parts.

Thank you so much for your time and contributions to the DIY community!
