Active vs. Passive X-overs

A passive filter adds far more distortion and phase anomalies than an active stage. I'm not sure about your logic that passive is better, although you do make some great points about matching drivers first!

Even if it's just a 1.5uf cap in series with the tweeter?
Hard to believe, when there are so many variables on going active.
Passive signal filtering? Active?
PSU, grounding arrangements, more connectors, more cables, discrete? chip? tube?
And it it goes on and on...

Believe me, if you can go with a very simple crossover (which for me is the ideal approach), a decent cap in the tweeter is so much transparent...
A well chosen woofer (or fullrange) will go fine without any crossover.
