First, I would like to thank Ace for sharing his knowledge to the community and bringing so many new people, like myself, into DIY.
I started reading this yesterday and finished all 96 pages this morning. Theres a ton of info in here.
I am interested in trying to make one of these, but I wouldn't want to attempt it without one of your plans. Are these out yet? Did this projector project never get finalized?
I am just saying this because of major lack of posts since around September 2004.
Ace, I sent you an email yesterday, you can reply here or just shoot one back to me, thanks.

Heya buddy, welcome to the forum 🙂 .
Ok this is the story. Basically over the last year ive been doing research and testing new ideas to get the "ideal" projector. Ive also done clones of others in a test bench to see how acurate their cams are using the exact same parts to get a reference on things.
I have finalised about 7 designs, (out of about 25 from memory), but never botherd to finnish the plans on every design, (all on paper not on comp). Why? because i design an even better projector just about every couple of weeks, and im not going to give others plans that are out of date and no longer upto my spec. You guys want the best, so ill give you the best.
Because so manny are interested in building what i design, parts also become a problem with their availability and price, so things can get tricky. If i design a top notch projector and if the parts arent available, whats the good of that? Not only do i have to keep an eye on my designing, but also the optical market for you guys.
An "ideal" diy projector to me comes under the following:
Looks
Form factor
Saftey
Size
Noise level
Building cost
Running costs
Ease of construction
Heat generation
Parts availability
Power eficentcy
Image quality
Life longetivity
Versatility
Once all of those are masterd you have an "ideal" projector, and imo, im darn close. I have acomplished all of those listed above in one design or another, its the trick of fitting all of those into one.
Im doing my last optical design now and it will be the second last major final design. From this new optical design alone i have managed to design 5 form factors in just over a week, including one being able to be the theme of a Hooters Stripers sign. Themes are endless form factors are not. The form factors i design are versitile and interchangeable (along with all parts/hardware) allowing us to have a great deal of themes and to fit in ones desired space/needs/aplication..
Whats left to go on this final and will it be released?
This design will be released after i make the proto. The only designing i have left to go on this design is the internal looks, (remember its being made out of plexi so the inside has to look interesting), room for the cooling and cooling, light engine construction, and final overal sizing. Once i have done this all of the list above will be acomplished.
Whats next for ace?
Well to be honest im just about done with lcd's, ive done basically everything possible with everything to do with a single lcd projector and there isnt much left to do other then themes. After the final 2 designs thats it for me, ill be moving onto diy DLP. While lcd's put out a great image, they are simply too inefficent for me.

thanks,
Thanks Ace,
That was exactly the information I was looking for. As soon as you have those plans up I will be first in line to buy them.

Focal length calculator
HI, i was just wondering if you guys have a link to this one focal length calculator that uses the LCD diameter, distance to the object and screen diagonal to calculate the right objective lens you need...
...i used to have it a while back, but lost the link. thanks.

omg, that program is AWESOME... thank you so much...
Also, do you guys have an issue with annoying humming coming from the ballast when the system is on? if so, how can i deal with it? thank you.

Is ACE_3000 even still going on this project???? No post have been made for quite a long time as to it's progress and emails (from myself anyway) have not been answered. Plans for this project would be excellent. If your still hard at work ACE_3000, give us all a shout out!!!
Heya guys, yeah im still here and still going, ive got a few other things going on aswell so its taking a while.
The new design isnt easy, ive been stewing over it the last few weeks and made a start yesterday.
Sorry for the late emails.

Its the nature of ballasts to hum like its the nature of dogs to sniff foul things they drop.
Some ballasts hum above your hearing range. How do you deal with the others? Let me digress. When sound engineers build an isolation room in a studio they build a floating room only connected to the world by a squishy layer like a jam sandwich.
You can build a double walled box with gel or rubber in between. Unfortunately you will have to baffle the vents and other holes which adds cost to your system. You can end up with a very quiet projector though! Fan noise and everything is deadened. This is a much better movie environment and worht it i think.
