Hi Gaetano - the 3pin H1 is a KF2510 3way, same species as used elsewhere on Abbado except its only 3pins. The left pin is at the bottom assuming the silkscreen for 'H1' is the correct way up.
As for coupling cap, I see the Nutube stage has about 50k input impedance so you'd want a minimum of 1.5uF for the series cap. Polypropylene is best but I'm not sure I'd hear the difference between that and a Wima polyester.

Yes,thanks for the clarification. Were there many other changes in values of components across the current r2 version, from the r1 version, that it would be beneficial to just buy the r2 version and make the resistor swaps?
As far as I recall, the I/V resistor changes were the only component value modifications but its possible I tweaked one or two values to rationalize the BOM. I'd not suggest buying a whole new DAC to progress from r1 to r2.
Hello friends.
I have long wanted to assemble a multi-bit DAC. I was choosing a design and our Dorati. I wrote to Abraxalito, and he recommended Abbado II to me. And as it turned out, it was not in vain.
I hoped to receive a parcel from him a month ago, but the postal services were very slow. Although Richard sent everything very quickly.
He also helped me buy a receiver board and a power supply! 🙏
A couple of days before the New Year, I assembled my Abbado II.
Don't be afraid of the placement of the boards on plexiglass and in a tray 🙂
This is for testing, then all this will be in the case and I will show how it looks in the final.
But how does Abbado's sound? I will try to be neutral and avoid the epithets "magical", "filled with air", etc.
1) Timbres. They are very beautiful and really different from each other. Only for this you can already love the TDA1545.
2) Speed. The sound simply appears from space, plays all its overtones and disappears into space again. And it's always on time and accurate. Especially noticeable on fast compositions.
3) Bass. When I turned on Abbado II for the first time, I couldn't believe my ears. How can a DAC affect bass so significantly? I have good TL 3-band loudspeakers . And now it has opened up completely.
4) Polyphony. I don't like (or rather didn't like) listening to symphonies. And although I have favorite compositions, it was still like "to endure" every time. As it turned out, my previous DACs simply couldn't cope with this task. Abbado turned out to be great in this too. I listened to Hans Zimmer concerts for several hours and couldn't tear myself away from listening.
5) Volume and fullness. Of course, this parameter depends on the speakers and the amplifier and much more. And Abbado II added to this piggy bank. You know how women are usually neutral to sound, but my wife noticed that we have great sounds (for the first time in a long time 🙂)
Thanks, Richard!
PS. Sorry for my English 😉

Andrey - thanks very much for such a lovely write up of your experience with Abbado II. Section 4) is very dear to my heart as I also had various kinds of music I didn't much care for until I listened through my own DACs. Opera was one, before TDA1387 and TDA1545 the emotion (which I take now to be the whole reason for the existence of opera) didn't much shine through. I have gotten to the stage where I can now 'endure' composers who I had to turn off before - Bartok being one. My wife though is a big Bartok fan!
Btw your English is just fine. 😎

I am not afraid (anymore). Thank you for sharing your build and listening impressions. I like your enclosure very much. I was too shy to share my Abbado in a plexiglass and MDF box. I love using plexiglass and wood as enclosures for all my builds (except speakers), and now they all have become permanent enclosures. For the record - I found that plexiglass and MDF does not affect SQ.Don't be afraid of the placement of the boards on plexiglass and in a tray 🙂

This looks great! Besides, both plexiglass and MDF can be decorated any way you like. Even aluminum or mahogany 🙂 Use it if necessary.
Anyway, it's cool! The power of DIY is that you can do whatever you want!
