It's going to end up almost aperiodic with all that stuffing and the missing back wall. Adjusting how much works is going to be a challenge. Interesting concept.
What do you mean when you point to aperiodic?
I do not yet have a clue how much stuffing would need to be applied, but I think there is plenty of room for it. What is shown is 8 2 inch thick pieces of the chopped cotton wall batting, mostly just to indicate that a lot will likely be needed.
I have no intention of building this beast, just wanted to complete the thought. If anyone is interested in it, I can provide the Autocad 14 solid model it comes from, or the Sketch up import.

Oh, I thought you had drills, saws and glue all ready! =(
Not really sure about the aperiodic, but looking at the stuffing and the missing back wall made me think that. You have a sort of box, but not a bass reflex or sealed box. A lot of the back wave is going to be attenuated, there should not be much resonance. And thus no period. It's a huge resistive vent.

John K calls this scheme a cardioid open baffle and you should go to his site to read up on it. You have already heard it in G Pimm's system, so you know how powerful and yet delicate and unruffled it can sound. I suppose, if you were crazy enough, you could duplicate his dual 15" driver bass cannon's......... but I still want to get to live at home.
I am pretty sure that this system would effortlessly fill a very large room with the music from a very large and powerful orchestra, choir or Organ. And it would be just as involving with a girl and her guitar. Now, Patricia Barber, live in her home town, would be pretty spectacular.
You really do want to investigate the Audio Nirvana drivers, when we get an economy back in the USA. Kind of makes the Hemp Acoustic 8 inch drivers sound thin and shrill by comparison. Absolutely the best phase plug to whizzer relationship I have heard, even in the 15".

Bud- perhaps you should look at the old Hartley-Turner Boffle design. That worked reasonably well.

Yes I am. I have the pre-required DCX crossover box, a christmas gift from my wealthy son, and am planning to wind the 24 step attenuation transformers in the coming month. Then the modding process to get rid of as many opamps from the Berringer as I can. By then it should have warmed up a bit and I can try to talk some friends, ones who can actually make things out of wood, into helping me not ruin too many pieces of birch plywood.
Drivers are finished. I have yet to order the cotton batting for the cardioid loading, but how hard can it be.......? Gary Pimm has said he will be here this weekend with a hi rez computer based music system and one of his SS / transformer coupled amplifiers, just to whet my appetite.

The original design for the attenuator transformers was a flop. I actually believed the data sheets concerning permeability. You would think by now I would have learned better.....

Really, really exciting project here Bud.
I see what you mean about your top driver being similar in baffle position to what I was talking about on my 3 way open baffle thread.
The Karlson slot things are very interesting, I've never heard any speakers using that design. Have you, and how do they sound?

It's slightly off-topic but, if you get to hear Gary's Pimm design, please come back with a review. Tabor, his transformer coupled SS amp seems to me one of the most extraordinary designs I've yet to see.
And best of luck with your project, it's innovative enough to be a great story 🙂

Well, I have provided transformers to Lynn's Amity and Karna and Gary's SS and tube Tabor. Of the four, the SS Tabor is the closest to no sound I have ever heard. Essentially no distortion, no noise and seeming infinite resolution. The Karna might have a slight edge in providing the "beauty" of music due to the 300 B tubes and it might also be slightly more dynamic, but these are very fine differences. However, they also have that seemingly inherent noise character, that all tube amps I have or have heard are partial to. Not much, not really noticeable, until Gary's SS amp removes them and your semi autonomous threat assessment correlator relaxes just that bit more.
I simply had no idea SS could sound like this as all of my previous SS amps had been various degrees of harsh and edgy (SAE Mk3 A germanium, Borberly DC servo Fet, various Dennon class A Fets) This is the reason for wanting to combine the PP driver stage from Gary's SS Tabor with a SE 300B, trying to get the best from both sectors to drive that invasively revealing PM6A driver.
In any event I would rate Gary's amp right up there with the very best of the best. More than worth the build up if you are tending towards that.

Hehe,
Actually, Lynn's site and his work on Amity, Aurora and Karna brought me to hi-end audio and then to this forum.
Reading Lynn's articles I had the first insight of what really serious design actually means, and I remember at least once asking to my self who is this transformer luthier, Bud Purvine, being praised over and over for his Level 5, hand wired, output transformers. I found fascinating to meet you then here, over this board.
I hope Garry Pimm and Gary Dahl will also start writing more around here. Their knoweledge is incredible. Every time I look at your design guys I get awed. It's fun remembering all this now.
I was about 16 when first entered nutshellhifi.com and met you guys. And never leaved 🙂 Thank you for this!

I've also heard Gary's amp on several occasions and it's super clean, as Bud notes.
No noise, no egdiness ,no apparent coloration, never gets into trouble on loud or complex music. In fact you don't really think about the amp at all, just the music.
Seems very, very close to the "straight wire with gain."

This amp is on my wish list...
