Remembering the optimal sphere/teardrop shape, would a rounded corner be better than a 45° one?
I'm thinking that a rounded corner is just a compromise in radius between the square edges (radius is zero) and the sphere (radius is maximum).

I dont think so. 45 is ok. Very good. Bigger is better.

Does the rear curved shape benefit from this 45° chamfer as well?

Not really, and a chamfer imitates a larger roundover.

Backside not so much, but making the whole tging look more like a teardrop the better.
