It sounds like someone gargling while trying to sing, or like trying to talk through a fan.

The frequency shift makes it sound like classic Doppler to me.

That's not just doppler shift - it's pure IM distortion. Think of it this way. Move the coil too far either way (with your fingers) while it's playing and the volume goes down noticeably, right? The peaks on both sides of a 40 Hz tone can do that, too. While it's in the middle, it plays the higher frequency tone(s) at "full volume", but at max excursion in both direction, the volume of the HF tone gets reduced periodically. So it's like gating the higher frequency content on and off, which sounds like talking into a fan.

I've actually heard some of the ghetto gangsta stuff mixed like that on purpose, so you don't even need to beat your system senseless to get it to sound right 😀

Not to disagree with you, the "gargling" effect, or the sound as you describe it which sounds like talking into a fan of is real, and though phase modulation, or intermodulation (IM) are more accurate descriptors than Doppler distortion, the problem is caused by exceeding Xmax, thereby causing AM (amplitude modulation) of the HF tones by the LF tones.

The difference in Xmax can be very large between speakers, but the effect ends up sounding similar whether it is a small full range speaker driven past Xmax at 1mm or a mid-bass (or vocal monitor) driven past Xmax at 5mm.

Interesting. 🙂
Such distortions for some people are like indicators of loudness. I once invited one fellow audiophile to check my home system. It is 4'way, with long excursion drivers in horns under the floor (actually, transformers because they are not so long for horns), and line arrays for mids and highs. I had to go outside "to smoke a cigarette" because he set volume on very high level, but kept saying that it sounds not enough loud.

If it's a single RCA input with no right or left label, chances are it's meant to be connected to the LFE output on a home theater receiver.

my sub has 2 types of line in : one with 2 rca for L and R and with sub cut off frequency and another with a single rca in to connect to a receiver (LFE) that will control the cut off fequency of the sub . You can connect yours to one of the channels of the amp only but without crossover the sub will roll off at a higher frequency and probably will "mud" , "darken" the sound , and bass will be less tight. i like my sub to cut of around80-90hz , without XO the sub will go beyond 200hz

am i correct in assuming, that when we use 2 x 12 inch subwoofers, or 1 x 18, in a similar sized box, we get results that are close to each other with subtle differences?

maybe 1 box will get a little lower, maybe one a little louder, maybe one a little less distortion, but generally they will all be close in performance?

my point being, why build a really complicated build when a simple build would do almost the same thing?

I had a dream the other night that I built the same style of cabinet (tqwt) that Bjorno helped me with but it was 4 times the size and had a TC Sounds 5400 in it.

I've never really inspected the specs for the driver, but I suspect that would be a bad idea.

Hi DrDyna,

Do you want to extend your Sub low FR end with a I-Sub? (I=Infra).

TC-Sounds LMS 5400 ultra

FYI:
Prior to design a T-TQWT enclosure: Testing the TC-Sounds LMS 5400 ultra in a corner(Home) placed minimum size OD-TQWT:

Well, that would be cool 🙂 It might be fun to play 1812 overture cannon blasts and take people's hats off with it 🙂

Unfortunately, TC sounds 5400s aren't in my budget right now 🙁

I do love these ones I have now though, I've had these drivers in a few different typical cabinets and these are the ones I've been most impressed with. All my other cabinets are in the garage 🙂

😀 Yes...But might cause structural damage to the ear interiors too... 😱

My previous last posted picture converted into a 'small' :xfingers: T-TQWT and a somewhat larger T-TQWP.

That would be f---ing awesome. Someday I will get some 5400's to play with, but I also think I need a new amplifier, my Anthem MCA-2 probably wouldn't work very well.
