Just to complete the picture - your original example of 1 watt producing 88dB translates to an efficiency of 0.77 percent if the loudspeaker radiates into 4 x Pi free space and the SPL is measured at a distance of 1 metre.
The 'dB efficiency calculator' applet referred to by Djim will give a different result because it assumes radiation into 2 x Pi space rather than 4 x Pi space. Even when this difference is taken into account there will still be a slight discrepancy because the efficiency formula used by the applet contains a simplifying approximation.

I have one in each corner of the house in the Den. 1 1k amp per sub. They have a cross over set to 80HZ and down. The folks next door hate me. Gonna re do them this summer.. Not sure with what.
