There's no such thing as 'British English' - British is a bastardisation of the Celtic word Britonnic which is itself an Aryanisation of Celtic. Many 'English' are in fact not 'English' the word is derived from the north German tribe the Engli. Most are fat little Saxons or Swabians.
American English is the result of far too many American TV programmes on European TV channels. American English contains many words that are archaic English from before 1776. The word route (phonetic 'root) is pronounced in American English as 'rout' as in an army running away rather than fight - timely Afghan army in the last 10 days.
