15th Annual Vancouver Island diyFEST-2018

SCD please show us your Baby Huey

Well Strange as it may sound I do not have a picture of the amp yet.

A description perhaps:

Chassis is Gary Oak with Yew Butterflys across the corners
Transformers come from a ~1963 Ampex Stereo console that was 7 ft long.
Drive tube is a 6n2p, output tubes at the fest were/are 6n6c (russian 6v6)
Black top plate trimmed with brass screws and bolts.

Here is a picture before I took it down. I put KT66 in for the photo.

It has a total of about 10 hours on it, the first five were at the fest. It keeps getting better, the sound stage is wide, the detail is clear. Vocals are crystal clear. My wife said she finally figured out the words to a song we listened to this morning.

I play it at home with my Frugel-horn A10p En. It is a great combination. I highly recommend both pieces of equipment.

Thanks for the interest.

Maybe somebody took a picture at the fest.

I really liked Scott's Pass F4 amplifier...a lot! It was smooth and detailed with no audible faults that I could hear or identify. With my Aikido pre-amp I thought it was nearly a perfect combination with the larger back-loaded horns on the rear deck. I thought that was perhaps the best combination I listened to during the weekend, although Dave's open baffle speakers were quite nice as was Howard's 3-ways, when he finally got everything sorted out and they started sounding quite nice.

Again, I would like to thank Ruth and Dave for their warm hospitality and providing us with a place to have this event. It was wonderful!

Best Regards,
TerryO

Hello Dave:
Well that is still a question I have not resolved. I was having trouble with the filament supply. Start up draws a lot of amperage, the smps that I have in there right now goes into shut down mode with more than a 10amp draw.
Plate voltage on the output tubes is ~500vdc, therefore anything in the 6l6 family could work if I can provide enough current for the filaments. I have a set of 6l6gc, kt66, el34, and 6n6c (6v6gt). Right now I am real happy with the 6n6c. As has been said by others they are very musical. I have not turned it up full power in the living room yet as it fills the space with lovely sound at just over 1/2 way.

I hope this helps

Tom’s new 686 is a pretty damn nice un-sounding piece,;

Glad you liked it. :D

“Wish you were here” is definitely one of those nights fromwhich it’s probably sacrilegious - or at least less involving -to pick out selected tracks, and “Set the controls “ is still a fun late night spacey trip

Wish You Were Here was awesome. It was fun to "DJ" with you.

I arrived back in Cow Town last night after a stopover at Paul Lake Provincial Park Sunday night. The return trip was pretty uneventful. Once I escaped the Vancouver traffic, the trip proceeded at the speed limit 99% of the way. Light rain along the Coquihalla Highway was followed by clearing (both of clouds and smoke) and I even saw a few stars at Paul Lake. I woke up to sunshine and scattered clouds. I made sure to stop for dinner and a dip in the hot springs in Banff too. Good times.

Thanks to Ruth, Dave, and everybody else involved in hosting the DIY Fest. It was a great time.

Tom

Thank you so much Dave and Ruth for having us.

I do not remember the last time I went somewhere not knowing anyone and having so many pleasant conversations with nice, interesting, and intelligent people! Truly the gear played second fiddle to the people.

I would like to especially thank everyone for being so engaging to Abby, my girlfriend, who came too. I was conscious not to leave her alone, but kept getting distracted by cool people and things, only to find her also enjoying someones company.

If any of you in Victoria, or visiting, are in my Fairfield neighborhood, and would liek to stop by, send me a PM.

The “large columns” in photo #10 are the new Mark Audio Alpair A11MS, in Scott Lindgren’s MLTL. Not quite as inobtrusive as the several Pensils I’ve built, but they sounded very detailed and had huge soundstage- particularly with Neurochrome Modulus686 -the little box on the flor with green light aglow.
