but what is a "candy" cap?
good question.Or prime beef polystyrene such as Relcap RT/RTX, small size Wondercaps or old school Siemens KS.
Jacco,
how about plain and simple english?
A stack of 2.2uF Wima FKP with a 0.1uF styroflex/teflon bypass is pretty ok, shame it looks so messy.
Would a 0.01uF 50V styroflex be a useful value as a bypass for the 10uF MKP? (I can buy a bunch of them cheaply.)
Joe
You're likely referring to glass appearance axial polystyrene caps.
Those cost 5 bucks for a 100 item bag overhere.
The types i mentioned differ in a number of ways, which makes/made them much more expensive.
Leads are much thicker, they're epoxy sealed, inner build-up is different.
The standard bug styroflex caps are a pita to solder, the types i mentioned before are not.
The piccy : a 10nF ITT KS17 Styroflex on the left, 100nF Vishay/Roederstein KP1837 in the middle, standard cheapo polystyrene i don't bother to read on the right.
Notice the decreasing lead diameter from L to R.

I thought I read somewhere that Axon and Solen were identical. Madisound carries Solen.
Solen 10 mfd Fast Cap 400V from Madisound

I just got 2 Axon 11uF caps on sale from partsconnexion.
Partsconnexion says they are tighter tolerance than the Solen and sound as good.
They cost less too.
Using these at the output of a BOZ-J.

SCR Chateauroux in France manufactures both Solen as Axon capacitors.
Even for other brand names, same story for a lot of foil cap manufacturers.
There aren't really that many capacitor manufacturers worldwide, compared to the number of brands.

Thanks for that information Jacco. I'll give those axial PS a miss and try some of the others you mentioned (only available here by mail order). I can get Axon MKP easily here in Western Australia and I have used them in pre-amps, amps and CD players. However, my curiosity was stirred when you wrote about bypassing them with "Candy Caps."

US Prime, eye candy, candy, bonbon, or a sugar cube additive for your audio tea.
Some folks may have developed a fixation on types and numbers to the extent that they read "candy" as some sort of brand name.
The point i was attempting to get across is that the option of combining a decent large value foil cap with a smaller one of much higher quality can be more economical.
Guys such as Tony Gee overhere do a good job, even if pretty subjective, even if only with foil capacitors for lsp crossovers in mind.
He does also point to fiddling with "candy" combinations, one need not stare at exotic single item names only.
Maybe one day someone else is willing to examine capacitor combinations, no matter whether the stance is methodogical or subjective.
Where i live has the size that nearly fits under a postage stamp, within a 50 mile range there are audio parts stores that offer creme of the crop components, whether it's capacitors or sota stepped attenuators.
A lot of the parts i buy i order on all four continents, if only for the savings.
